Help[Opinions] Tripp
This name has been growing on me lately. To be honest, when I first heard it I thought it sounded odd. I know someone with the surname Tripp and never saw anything strange about it but for some reason as a first name, I always thought it sounded like too much of a word name. Like the verb "to trip".
Anyways, it's starting to appeal to me now. When I say it aloud, it has a very cool sort of hip sound to it. It sounds modern and strong to me. I like it on a boy although I actually think it could work on a girl too (maybe more as a nickname though).
So what do you think? I'm interested to hear your opinions.

Linda Tripp plus Bristol Palin's child makes this name completely unappetizing to me.

It's cute as a nn. It could be short for a name beginning with a T like Thomas. Or if he is the third one with the name in the family, or the third child, something like that. I can see the cool, "hip-ness" of it. :-)
But I'd never put it on a birth certificate. I'd never ask a son to go into a job interview named Tripp.

It'd be a nice nickname, but I just can't see it as a given name. Plus it is misspelled, which is one of my biggest pet peeves. I don't mind word names, but if you are going to use one at least spell it correctly.

I actually really like it. I agree, it sounds modern and forward-thinking. I know a Tripp, and I also associate it with Matthew McConaughey's character on Failure to Launch, both of whom are very moderb/progressive men. I dig it.

Right, sounds modern and hip, like all fashion items do, and then they seem really dumb later. When thinking about usability one must strip away modern-youthful-hip, because those are the things that go away, and see if there's anything left. With Tripp I don't think there is.

I saw a youtube video of a girl making baby blogs and she named her son Tripp. One of her videos was titled "Tripp's first trip!" I don't like it at all. It sounds awfully trendy and it's just nms. Plus I don't really like word names.

I was introduced to this as a name through Trip Fontaine in The Virgin Suicides so it will always sound a bit eerie to me just because of the vibe of that whole story.
I can't imagine it as a real name at all. I just can't take it seriously. It sounds like a nickname. If I found out someone had Tripp as their name on their birth certificate, I would probably feel bad for them having been jaded a "real" name.
I'd say if you wanted to use it as a nickname, you may be able to get away with it, but never saddle a child with it as a full name. No way.

I had a dog called Trip, so I can't see it as a persons name. Even without the dog connotations I wouldn't like it.

I see the appeal, but to me, it's just too spunkay and ruff tuff. Makes me go, gimme a break. Only works on certain personalities. With an irritable or meticulous personality ... how droll it could be.

Can you explain why? This is a name that I don't see anything wrong with so if people hate it, I want a reason to be talked out of it. I don't want to give my future son a name that others dislike to that extreme. Is it just unappealing to you or is there something really awful that I'm missing out on?

Sure. It's extremely tacky and low-class. It seems modern and unique, but it's going to sound silly years from now, it's just another fad, and on a grown man, ugh, I can just imagine how hard it will be for people to take him seriously. Plus, the only Tripp I know of is Sarah Palin's kid, and I wouldn't want that association personally.
It's not a name to me, it's a word. It's like naming a child Run, or Fall, or Walk, or Climb. I don't like the sound either, there are beautiful names out there, and then people go use Tripp?
Overall, I don't like it one bit.

I know a cowboy-ish guy named Trip. He's really nice so I like the name.

I think it's extremely cheesy, and reeks of Sarah Palin. Bad association. She's a loon.
