Help[Opinions] Autumn?
Now my husband's top pick is Autumn. I do like it, but don't love it (but I haven't found any names I really love). It's my favorite season and it goes well with our last name (begins with a vowel). However, a friend recently commented that it sounds like a Playboy Playmate name. In the back of my mind, I had thought it may sound a little ... stripperish ... wdyt? No offense intended to anyone on the board named Autumn btw (or any boardmembers who are Playmates or strippers :)).
A coworker also commented that she preferred traditional names, which sounded like a backhanded way of saying I had no taste. wdyt? Would you consider it very non-traditional and/or tacky?

I really like Autumn. Actually I'm gonna add it to my PNL in a minute. I don't think it sounds like a stripper or Playboy name.

I have an aunt whose first name is Autumn, although she goes by her middle name. She's in her seventies, a feminist and a liberal. You'd never see her doing anything stripperish or even go to a Hooters. But, she's also estranged from her brothers. At their aunt's funeral in July, my dad and uncle said hi to her, and she completely ignored them, not even saying hi back. I wouldn't use it because of that association, but I'm not against it as a name. I also remember a girl my sister was in 4-H with named Autumn who was paralized in a car accident.

I love Autumn, and I don't think it's trashy at all. It's soft and lovely.

Maybe it's because my main association w/ the name has been sweet young girls, 1 of which I don't think would ever dream of that lifestyle and the other at least wouldn't have the figure for it... It's not on my list of faves, but it's ok and has good associations. As long as you don't pair it w/ something cheesy like Bambi or Bubbles, it doesn't sound very playboy/stripper to me.
It may not be SUPER traditional, but it's not tacky either... somewhat average and preferable to another Lily or Sophia. My reason for not using it wouldn't be disliking it, but just having so many other names I like more.
It actually feels like a somewhat calm name.

Funny that you should say that your friend says it sounds like a Playboy Playmate! And that you think it sounds a little stripperish! There used to be a young couple who lived next door to us. They had a two-year-old daughter named Heather. They told us that when they were expecting her, the mom-to-be had suggested Autumn as a possible name. The husband vetoed it on the grounds that it sounded like a stripper name. He performed a facsimile (a poor one at that) of a stripper-walk-down-the-runway while he told us this story.
I couldn't see it then and I can't see it now. I don't see how Autumn is in any way a Playboy Playmate or stripper name. In fact, I think it is much less so than Heather, the name they ultimately chose. And I was blunt enough to say this to them. And then he agreed with me, that Autumn is no more of a stripper name than Heather is. So...not really sure why Autumn was vetoed on the stripper grounds while Heather was approved.
Anyway...I don't think that objection has any merit. Nor do I think that Autumn is tacky, though I'd agree that it's non-traditional. My son-in-law's four-year-old niece is named Autumn. She's a very sweet little girl. My personal opinion is that the name has some charm....but I don't personally find it attractive enough to use myself. Autumn is also my favorite season (though I commonly use the word fall instead of autumn)---but I don't think I find autumn an attractive enough word to make a really attractive name.
But if you and your husband do, go for it, and don't worry about it being non-traditional, since there is a place for non-traditional names--if every single name were traditional, the world would be a boring place--and don't worry about Playboy Playmates or strippers, because it's not that kind of a name!

I could see Heather as more of a playmate or stripper name than Autumn... However, Heather's a broad enough name that most w/ that name do other things instead. There were just so many Heathers born in the 60s-80s that they wound up doing all sorts of things... and some became strippers and models while others became mums and businesswomen and teachers and such.

I quite like Autumn. It's also my favorite season and the name has a pleasant sound.
I don't think it sounds "stripper-ish." If anything I think it sounds more hippie than Playmate. It's not traditional, per se, but it isn't outlandish by any means.

ditto, it's a lovely name and is less popular than Winter will be this year IMO. It's on my list as well
