Message: "Turquoise" - Behind the Name

I was partnered in a class today, with a guy who has a sister called Turquoise, which I only found out as the classs was about memory (we had to share certain facts about each other, which we weren't allowed to write down, and then next week we're going to see what we remember). Details about our siblings was one of the facts we were asked to share (although we didn't have to reveal their names, it was how many and what gender they were, sharing names was optional).

I think it's safe to say, that between now and next week, I'm not going to forget he has a sister named Turquoise!

I like some color names but I'm really not liking this one.

I love the sound and imagery, but I can never remember how to spell Turquoise, it would drive me batty. I have to ask, does he have an unusual name as well? I went to school with a guy with a totally common, dull name who had sisters named Echo and Summerbee, it blew my mind.

No he doesn't, I actually meant to put his name in the original post, but I forgot.

He is Christopher.

I'm hoping I might be able to find out a bit more during next week's class, such as whether she goes by a nickname.

Turquoise sounds a little "forced"; by that I mean as in forced upon a child to sound original. Something a little more subtle like Teal would be preferable for me.

My first instinct was to say I like it, because my first instinct was that it's a pretty word, based upon the way it looks. But then I thought about it more. The first syllable--"turk". And then the second--"oize." And it would be easy to shorten to "turkey." Nah.

That's exactly how I feel. It's a pretty gem and color, but the actual word has an unpleasant combination of syllables, along with no nn.

maybe the word coming from a different language would work better... like Firuza or Fairuz. Still nms, but better... and they're "real names".
