[Opinions] Hawkeye
My SO and I really love the name Hawkeye and would love to use it for a first name for a boy (it has a special meaning to us)! Just wondering what everyone thinks of Hawkeye for a boy and wondering about middle name suggestions? I would like something old fashioned and something he could go by if he grew up and didn't like Hawkeye.
Our other names are pretty eclectic, but have meaning to us as well. With that in mind, do you think it goes ok with our list?
Arlo William
Clover May
Ramona Anne
Holden Lewis
Clara Louise
Thanks! :)

You asked for opinions so I am going to give it - although it is harsh. Honestly, if I met someone named Hawkeye I would think their parents were desperate for attention or jumped on the "name my kid like a celebrity" bandwagon. Now, I'm sure that you're a perfectly nice person but I'm giving you my honest opinion. I think, as a nickname, it is cute but as a full name it is just too over the top.
Even the name "Hawk or Hawke" is okay but Hawkeye is just too much. I don't believe in conforming but honestly, it reminds me of my friend Andrew who jokes all the time about naming his daughter "Carpet". Its like picking a random word and using it as a given name.
I see several people describing this name as "badass". If you think the name is "badass" then I suspect you like names like: "Moon Unit, Jermajesty, Pilot Inspektor, and maybe even Carpet.
It is a bit much for real life but then again, there are plenty of other off-the-wall goofyass names to go around so your kid would be just one of them.
I just can't help thinking though, that it would be terribly ironic and tragic if the kid went blind at some point.

I actually love the name Pilot for a boy and think Pilot Inspektor is pretty awesome as far as crazy celebrity baby names go lol
Iowa Hawkeyes
Its all I think.
Its all I think.
Hawkeye is badass, but the problem is that it's nothing but badass. You have to remember that you can't account for whether your son will grow up to be a badass. He might be very timid and conventional. Even if you give him a nice fallback name he's still stick with Hawkeye preceding it on rolls, ¡ob applications, drivers licenses. It's fun to play with but I cannot give it my stamp of Actual approval for a child.
As a middle name he would go by it would be slightly better. I noticed your combo Hawkeye Robert, which is very good and would work well reversed too. The other combo I like the most is Hawkeye Thomas / Thomas Hawkeye.

*picturing little skinny blond Hawkeye w/ cute little glasses and suspenders sitting at mum and dad's computer fixing things up for them*
I think just because the name Hawkeye might seem "badass" doesn't mean that the child Hawkeye will be. He will grow up to be whoever he wants and the name will change with him. If he grows up to be a wild adventurous person Hawkeye will seem like a wild name to anyone who knows him. And if he grows up to be a quiet bookworm the name will seem like a quiet name to everyone who knows him. Just like you could give a girl a really frilly name like Evangelina and she might grow up to be a tomboy and not frilly at all.
I think if he grew up to be a bookworm, people would think the name and child were mismatched and it would be better suited to an airforce pilot or something.
eh.. I like it, in theory. But in reality, I would actually feel sorry for a kid named this. They have to go through life with that name. And other kids arent very nice.
Being a big-time M*A*S*H fan, I think Hawkeye is awesome. I see no reason why you can't use it as a first name if that's what you want. I know a boy named Hawk and it fits him well. Personally, I like Hawkeye better.
Combos:
Hawkeye Vincent
Hawkeye Christian
Hawkeye Grant
Hawkeye Quinn
Hawkeye Ronald
Hawkeye William
Hawkeye Daniel
Hawkeye Paul
On a side note, I have an unusual fn and a common middle name and I love my name. If, for some reason, I really didn't like my fn I could easily go by my middle name. I tend to choose unusual fns with more "normal" mns for that reason.

I'm a huge M*A*S*H fan too :) and I love your quote!!
Hawkeye: "Who would name their kid BJ?!"
BJ: "My mother, Bea Hunicutt, and my father, Jay Hunicutt."
I like to go for unusual fn's too! I want unique fn's for my kids because everyone always thought my name and spelling was so unique and I loved it! And I figure I will give them more classic mn's that they can go by if they want!

Thanks. There are so many great quotes from M*A*S*H but I thought that was perfect for this board.
That's exactly how I feel about naming, too!
Edit: My first thought for a combo was Hawkeye Benjamin. I thought it might be too much M*A*S*H but it does sound really good (at least to me.)

Aww Hawkeye Benjamin would be awesome lol Yeah it would be very M*A*S*H though! lol
Should be left as a nn... and almost everyone will associate it w/ Pearce on MASH... and even for him on the show, it was just a nn. Wouldn't use it as a realname.
From your PNL, I most like...
Hawkeye Graeme - I think this is quite handsome
Hawkeye Rhys - the enthusiasm might be catching :)
Hawkeye Sebastian
Some other ideas...
Hawkeye Samuel
Hawkeye Benjamin
Hawkeye Bram
Hawkeye Frederick
Hawkeye Finn
Hawkeye Timothy
Hawkeye Vincent
Hawkeye Stuart
Hawkeye Edmund
Hawkeye Everett

Whew. You can't go wrong with a boy named Hawkeye. It sounds more like an nn though.
Yeah I know it would probably work better as a nn, but we really love it and the meaning it has to us, so we like it better as a fn. But that's why I want him to have a more classic mn so he can go by that if he wants! :)
well.. I kind of think it sounds like a airline...
It's cool in theory... maybe best as a MN??

Never thought of an airline. My automatic thought tends to be the show MASH.
And the Iowa Hawkeyes
ok, yes... maybe that too!
it's badass
Like seriously, it sounds like a biker name, or maybe a Shaman name. I like it. I think it goes pretty awesome with your list.
I'd par it with a more conservative English middle name, since that seems to be the style you enjoy.
Hawkeye Thomas
Hawkeye Richard
Hawkeye Michael
Hawkeye Christopher
Hawkeye Joseph
Hawkeye Leo
Hawkeye Roger
Hawkeye James
Hawkeye George
Although now it's also starting to sound like a pirate name. Which is also pretty badass.

Totally agree!
Lol that's what my SO said about it too! :p I really love Hawkeye Roger for some reason, but I'm pretty sure he wouldn't go for it. But Hawkeye Thomas, Hawkeye Michael, and Hawkeye Leo are also nice! I was also thinking about maybe Hawkeye Robert? That is another name that has meaning to us but I hadn't been able to find a match for it.
If one must, Thomas seems to fit w/ it best. Robert would be ok if it weren't so overused in my dad's era.
