Cormac McCormickI've noticed how Irish first names, at least the modern Irish spellings of them, get changed slightly when used as (Anglicized) surnames. Thus:Conor O'Connor
Brian O'Brien
Lachlan McLaughlin (OK, that's Scottish. Same principle.)
Dermot McDermott
Calum McCallum (Again, Scottish)
The surname spelling then becomes the basis for a "new" spelling of the first name. I don't like the trend. It feels uneducated to me. I'd much rather see Cormac used as the first name spelling. (Discolsure: Cormac is a top four boy's name for me so I'm very protective of it.)

I'm not sure but it could be to do with the English rule of the country, they may have Anglicised the Gaelic names to make them easier to spell. I wouldn't use Cormick as it looks made up and also uses the perogative for Irishman 'mick'. Cormac is in my top 4 as well so wouldn't mess with it.

The funny thing is, they Anglicized both the first name and the last name. But they used different spellings. Yet another mystery of English spelling.
