Catarina, Cat for short, was a complete surprise for Leo and Violet. They had not talked about whether or not they would have more children, but once she was born they couldn't imagine life without her. Like her big brother Thaddeus, she was born blonde and developed her father's honey-colored hair as she grew, and like Mira and El she had her mother's blue eyes. She grew up very outdoorsy and rough-and-tumble. She prefers building sand castles to playing dolls, chasing butterflies and grasshoppers to playing tea-party, and joining in her siblings' ball games to playing house. She is best friends with the four-year-old boy named Jack next door, and he is totally in love with her. All of the children love to be outside and play sports, but none so much as the precocious little toddler.
Another surprise pregnancy was discovered a few months before Cat turned three. This was a hard pregnancy, and everyone was worried about Violet and the baby. early labor had to be stopped several times, and finally at eight months the doctors decided not to wait any longer. They induced Violet, and their second son was born. His first few minutes he was not breathing and his heart wasn't beating properly. But the doctors worked quickly over him and he was soon screaming louder than any of the other children had. When he was put to the breast, he nursed eagerly, as if in a hurry to gain the strength he was missing. They named him Rocco, Violet's mother's maiden name, and Zachariah, which was a name they both loved. They also gave him a third middle name, Alban, a place name like Annie's middle name and to make sure the twins weren't the only ones with two middle names. Rocco is doing great, gainign weight and strength daily and with no apparent developmental delays or adverse effects from his early arrival.
