The Walshes
DH: Norwood "Woody" (50) Woody is the youngest of ten brothers. His parents and older brothers emigrated to the U.S. from a little village in England called Norwood, and he was their only son to be born in America and to never see the village. He was named Norwood so that the village "would still be a part of him". His brothers called him Woody because, as they put it, "Your head's made of nothing but wood!" There are no middle names in his family.
DW: Tempest Eleonore Ainslie "Tessie" (46) Tessie was born on a stormy winter night. It was plain to see that the storm was within newborn Tessie as well, hence the name Tempest, meaning "violent storm". She wasn't called Tessie until middle school, when classmates were exposed to Shakespeare and learned the meaning of "tempest", and teased her about it. Her best friend Nadine came to her rescue and started calling her Tessie, which stuck. Eleonore was her German grandmother's name. Ainslie is her maiden name.
DS: Sandulf Anthony "Sandy" (24) Sandulf is a Gothic name meaning "true wolf" (see Sandalio). One of the first things that Woody noticed about Sandy when he was first born was the birthmark on his shoulder blade shaped like a pawprint. He still calls it Sandy's "wolf print". Tessie and Woody simply saw the name Sandulf in a history textbook or somewhere like that and liked its meaning. It was a bit much for a little boy, so his parents shortened it to Sandy, but even now as a 24-year-old he's called that. He would never admit it, but Sandy thinks his full name is actually really cool, even if it rhymes with Gandalf (as his geeky friend pointed out). Anthony is Woody's oldest (and favorite) brother.
DS: Arthur Ainslie "Arlie" (21) Arlie is a combination of Arthur and Ainslie. Arlie was born the day after Tessie's beloved father, Arthur Ainslie died. Neither Woody nor Tessie liked either name, Arthur being "too old", Ainslie "too girly". First they called him Artie, then Art, but neither was right. One day when Art had been a naughty preschooler, Tessie called out, "Go to your room right this instant, Arthur Ainslie!" She had said it very fast and the Arthur Ainslie part came out as "Arthainslie". To herself she said it even faster, and it was "Arthlie". Finally she came up with "Arlie", and everyone was happy to stop calling him Art.
DD/DS: Odette Honoria "Ettie" (19) When Ettie was born, Woody and Tessie had three sons and one daughter. Tessie said, "She could be the only daughter we'll ever have! Let's give her the girliest, frilliest name we can come up with." And indeed they did. Odette was the name of a French actress in an old black-and-white film Tessie watched while she was pregnant (she doesn't remember what the movie was called) and both Tessie and Woody wanted a name that would HONOR them, so they chose HONORia as the middle name. Also, Honoria is similar to Norwood and Eleonore, Tessie's middle name. / Howard Emerson "Howie" (19) Woody and Tessie had spent so much time deciding Odette's name that they neglected Howie's. He was named after the kind, helpful nurse that helped deliver the twins, Howard. He was very cheerful and very gay. His middle name was after Tessie's favorite poet, Ralph Waldo Emerson.
DD: Windsor Nadine "Winnie" (17) Woody and Tessie always joke about Winnie's name. When Ettie and Howie were born, they lamented that Ettie would probably be their only daughter, so they should name her something especially girly, Odette. Well, whaddaya know, their next child was a girl! This was very ironic to them. They named this next daughter Windsor, an especially boyish name. No one seemed to understand the irony of it but them. Windsor was Woody's mother's maiden name and he had suggested it as a first name for all of his sons, but every time it was turned down. As a sort of joke he said, "Well, we could always use Windsor now!" when Tessie found out she was pregnant with a girl. She liked the idea, surprisingly. It was adorable on their new rosy-cheeked little girl. She's still called Windsor sometimes, but mostly people call her Winnie. Her middle name is after Tessie's lifelong friend, Nadine.
DS: Columba Miles "Coby" (13) Woody was raised Catholic, and although by the time Coby was born he'd already stopped attending religious services and pronounced himself agnostic, he still referred to Saint Columba as his patron saint. Coby hates Columba and refuses to answer to anything but Coby. Miles is another of Woody's brothers.
DD/DD/DD: Evangeline Audrey "Genie" (10) Tessie, a fervent lover of poetry, named her daughter after the epic poem Evangeline by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in which a maiden is torn from her lover on their wedding and spends her life searching for him until finally she meets him again, on his deathbed. He dies as they embrace, and she follows soon after. They are buried together in nameless graves. Her middle name is after screen legend Audrey Hepburn, one of Tessie's favorite actresses. Evangeline came up with the nickname Genie herself one day in second grade and liked it so much that she forced everyone to call her by it. / Auburn Chantal "Aubie" (10) All of the Walshes look alike: slightly wavy golden blond to brown hair; pale, clear skin that browns a bit in the summer; blue-gray eyes like Mom's or deep chocolate like Dad's. Everyone except Aubie, that is. She sticks out like a sore thumb and feels like she lost the genetic lottery. Her name is from the rich auburn color of her hair, which isn't tousled waves but corkscrew curls. Every inch of her skin is dusted with freckles no matter what time of the year. Her eyes are neither gray nor brown but a bright dazzling green, which she despises. Ettie was 9 when Aubie was born and got to choose her middle name. Her best friend at the time was a girl named Chantal. / Hannelore Cosette "Hettie" (10) Hannelore honors Tessie's German heritage and Cosette honors Woody's French. Sandy was in ninth grade reading Les Miserables when Hettie was born and suggested Cosette (a main character), which his parents liked. Hannelore was the result of tireless baby name book searching. They called her Hannelore up until she was about five, when she began calling herself Ettie because she wanted to be like her big sister Ettie so much! Tessie obliged by calling her Hettie, a clever combination of her names similar to Arlie.
So there you have it! Woody Walsh, Tessie Walsh, Sandy Walsh, Arlie Walsh, Ettie Walsh, Howie Walsh, Winnie Walsh, Coby Walsh, Genie Walsh, Aubie Walsh, and Hettie Walsh.
