It's adorable but a little too surnamey for my taste.

Just sit right back and I'll tell a tale...a tale of a fateful trip...My ONLY association w/ that name is the rich dude on "Gilligan's Island".

I think his name was ThUrsten.

It was spelled Thurston or Thursten, but it's still close enough that that's my only association w/ the name.

It was Thurston Howell. But Gilligan's Island is all I can picture as well.

It's nice, but I prefer Thor over Thorsten.

I pronounce it Thor-sten and I'm a huge fan of the name. I love the nn Thor.

It doesn't bother me, and I definitely don't hate it. Perhaps the reason why the others think it is dated is because they've only known older people to have that name.By the way, no offense but you should be open to negative opinions if they exist. If you are giving this name to a son, then he is the one that will live with it and may not have the same preferences as you. It is possible he may have the same opinion of the name as the ones who think it is dated.

I am very open to negative opinions but since I am not from nor have I ever been out of the US something being dated oversea's is not familiar with me. Some dated here such as Eugene, Warren, Nathaniel and so forth are coming back so my reply was to figure out how it is dated over there. Is it going to come back is it usable or is it a dead name like Earl.I don't think I have come across as offensive and my appologizes to you as well as Sigrid and Ninor if I have.I would also be interested if anyone here on BTN has a German take on Torsten as well. That is part of the reason we liked it because it is also used in Germany like my son Killian's name.

I don't think you came across as offensive at all!

The German take on Torsten / Thorsten: It is usable but most people consider it 'eco' or 'hippie' along with names such as Malte, Sören and well... Killian / Kilian. That's not necessarily a bad thing, just saying the name has a certain image. Btw, you would probably get away with Torsten / Thorsten a lot easier in Nothern Germany than in the South. Hope that helps.

Oh I love that! Hippie wanna be is me except I am just far from hippie hahah!

No problem, I couldn't tell if you were offended or not---the internet is an imperfect mode of communication.By the way, I am in the US and I really don't think the name is old-fashioned in a negative way. I have the same view of it as Emma: yes it is dated, but in a good way.

I think it's terrible. It's very dated.

Why is dated bad?Why is dated bad,?? I am assuming both you and Ninor our not in the US because I don't think its common enough here to even be considered dated!
vote up1
It depends on what is meant by dated...There are names like Estella and Josephine which are vintage. Then there are names like Gertrude and Bertha which sound like the names of an angry, old great-gran.

Because I think most dated names are ugly. Thorsten has the same feel as names like Norbert, Eugene, Earl and Vernon have in the US.
It's pronounced TOSH-ten where I live, btw.

From an area where the accent dumps and adds rs in the prn. of various places in words that other En. speakers don't?

That's interesting. Where I come from, a kid with a name pronounced TOSH-ten would probably get a lot of compliments. It's weird how different perceptions can be across the world, isn't it?

I like Eugene, its a comback so that doesn't throw me off! Norbert, and Earl are dated I guess you could say but I still don't even consider them popular I will have to look into it more!
vote up1
I don't think it has to be popular to be dated, it just has to be stereotypically an 'old person name' (and not in a good way)- names that are not ready for a comeback yet.
vote up1
No, we are both in Sweden. If you ask me, dated doesn't have to be bad. There is dated in a bad way, and a good way. Torsten is dated in a bad way for me (it is very weird on a child today, wrong generation etc)
vote up1
So its not dated enough for a comeback, but maybe in a few generations it would be? That kind of bad dated?
vote up1
Exactly.

I don't like it. It is my grandpa's MN though (one of them) and he spells it Torsten. For me, it is very dated and quite ugly. The only nn I can think of is Tor / Thor and I find Torsten Hawthorne too rhymey
