Ten years ago, Jethro's Chilean sister-in-law gave birth to a son, but she died immediately afterwards. Jethro and Hannah were at her side. This Chilean's last words were, "Jethro, take care of my son, give him a good home and a good name, and keep him safe. You're the legal guardians of any children I have. I made sure it was that way, Jethro. Keep him and raise him as your own, but don't allow him to forget he had a mother who loved him very much." With that she died. Jethro and Hannah named him after his deceased father, Jethro's brother Adrian, and his maternal grandfather, Nicolás. Adrian has been living as a Liechtenstein all his life.
A couple years ago, Hannah received a letter in the mail from a Xenia Elizaveta in Russia. Upon opening the letter, Hannah learned that Xenia was writing to her (Hannah) for school. Xenia let her know about herself. She was an almost-orphan. Her father had died from cancer when she was four years old. Her mother was abusive, and she and her siblings couldn't stay with her. Xenia had a twin sister named Zinaida Anastasia, whom she loved very much. She also had five older brothers, one older sister, and three younger sisters (all three were born a year after each other). Xenia told Hannah that she was eight years old and really wanted a family. When Hannah looked up the school to which Xenia said she was going, Hannah found out that it was a school for orphaned children. Hannah talked it over with Jethro and she and Jethro decided to adopt Xenia.
Joaquim Matias was adopted by Hannah and Jethro when he was 18 mo. Hannah's sister Susan, who was working in Brazil, had written Hannah and Jethro a letter saying that there was a small child in need of a good home. Susan, knowing how much Hannah and Jethro loved children, asked if they wanted to adopt another child. Hannah and Jethro responded excitedly in the affirmative. Joey was in Hannah's and Jethro's hearts even before he was officially theirs.
While a friend of Jethro's was living in India for a short while, he met up with a child of three named Lalita. Lia, as she called herself, was wandering the streets with no mother, no father, no siblings, no one to love her. Jethro's friend took Lia to an orphanage, immediately calling Jethro afterwards. Jethro and Hannah immediately asked to adopt the child. Jethro's friend was glad to help. Soon, Lia was brought into the Liechtenstein home to stay.
Zippy came to join the Liechtenstein family when she was 3 mo. old. Jethro, while on a trip to the Holy Lands, had stopped by the orphanage where Zippy was staying. When he first set eyes on the tiny child, he knew this little one needed a good home with good older siblings. Jethro called Hannah when he left and they decided that Zippy should go home with them, after, of course, all the steps for adoption were completed.
Seven months ago, the Liechtensteins were sojourning in Romania. While there, they met seven-almost-eight-year-old Daria Magdalena. Daria needed a home. Her father had died before she was even born, and her mother had passed away just five weeks before she met the Liechtensteins. Hannah's heart went out to the poor girl and she and Jethro decided to adopt this poor, orphaned child, too. She came home to join the Liechtensteins as soon as she could.
Xenia missed her twin sister Zinaida so much that Hannah and Jethro couldn't allow her to go any longer without her twin. Hannah and Jethro hadn't adopted Zinaida, and Eliza (Xenia) was getting lonely and depressed. The twins had been separated since they were eight. Hannah and Jethro adopted Zinaida, whom they've been calling Stacy, and the twins are happy again.
Elias joined the Liechtenstein family just three weeks ago from South Africa. Hannah and Jethro had decided that Adrian and Joey needed another brother and so the two of them went on an "orphan-in-need-of-adoption hunt." Hannah fell in love with the adorable South African boy and continued visiting him while they were in South Africa. Jethro saw that his wife obviously desired to bring this little boy home with them, and Eli came as soon as the adoption process was completed. Zippy loves her big brother Eli.
