I prefer Dorothea, but I do love the name!
Aw, it's not weak at all. Any name that's survived over 500 years of usage has to be seriously robust. And it is very cheerful.

You are making me love Kinborough. Dorothy Kinborough is wonderful. (As is Dorothy Sibyl and Dorothy Ellen)
Yay, Dorothy! She's so undeservedly overlooked, even by me and I like her. I don't find her weak at all. She's fresh and bubbly and yet down to earth at the same time. I put her in the same category as Susan and Anne. I picture a young woman in the time of the English civil war, the 1600's. I love most of the usual nns like Dot / Dottie, Dora / Dorie / Dory, Doro, Dodie, Dee.
Dorothy is nice as a nn for Dorothea, which is pronounced, "do-ro-THEE-uh," by th way. But I wouldn't ever use Dorothea as an alternate spelling of Dorothy. Dorothy can stand on her own quite well, of course. I just wanted to point out that the two names aren't pronounced the same way.

Oh, I adore Dorothy! It's one of my absolute favorite names. I also love Dorothea, but it's not pronounced like Dorothy.

Ooh thankyou! Loving:
Dorothy Griselda
Dorothy Mabel - my favourite, even if it's a bit cutesy
Dorothy Mathilde
Dorothy Jocasta
Dorothy Olive
Dorothy Olympia
Dorothy Velma - that's the sort of pizazz she needs!
She's a strange beast, is Dorothy. Doesn't take well to my usual favourites. And I'd not realised about the pronunciation, so more thankyous :)
