[Opinions] Odd pronunciation +edit
Okay, I'm not sure if y'all remember, but I told you that my boyfriend's name is Xavier, but we call him X because he never told us how it was supposed to be pronounced.Well, a few months ago, he told me. Apparently, his parents say SHAH-vee-air. (The "sh" is a bit different, but I'm not sure how to describe it other than a "sh" with a hispanic accent)I've never heard it with the "sh" sound before. What do y'all think? Also, I found out more of his family's names.Parents: Domingo and Ivelisse
Brothers, Andre Emmanuel and Giovanni "Gio"
Sister: Natasha Noelia
Him: Xavier RenéI don't yet know Gio's middle name. My name nerd self WILL find out though.

I imagine "ZAY-vee-er" is a heavily anglicised pronunciation. I think the way you mentioned is the Portuguese pronunciation?

If your boyfriend is hispanic/spanish decent, that would be the explaination. Javier is a common hispanic/spanish name pronounced as Ha-vee-air and Zsha-vee-air would be a spanish pronunciation of Xavier.

I've heard both SHAH-vee-air and CHAH-vee-air. SH is Basque and CH is Catalan, as far as I've heard (and learned). Xavier is used in Spanish, but I've never heard it pronounced.
I love it in Catalan, don't mind it with the SH sound, I like Javier (with the H sound) and in French, but don't like this in English at all.

Well, I've always pronounced it ZAY-vier. I think it sounds best that way.

I don't see the big deal, to be honest; it's only like Xabi Alonso's name.Emmanuel is an awesome name.

I have to ditto your whole post:-)
I also thought of Xavi Alonso (and my friend has a puppy named Xavi, with his pronunciation) and Emmanuel is indeed an awesome name:-)

Xavi is Xavi Hernández (with a CH sound), Xabi (with SH) is Alonso ;o)

I like the v spelling with the sh pronunciation, so I use that.
