Cool. It reminds me of Christopher but also Chester. I like it as an alternative to Christopher and Christian. I think it'd be usable. Some people might think it's a nickname for Christopher, but that is easily corrected. Good find.

I don't know about England. But here in the U.S. people would think it was Christ with a long "i" sound with an "r" on the end. And it wouldn't go over well. But the U.K. doesn't have our fundamentalist streak and so it might work. I prefer Kester over Christer for clarity.

"Christer" is sometimes used in the U.S. as a derogatory term for fundamentalist Christians. So it definitely wouldn't go over well here. The situation is probably different overseas.http://therevealer.org/archives/1866

I'd never seen it before, but my tendency was to pronounce it Chris-ter.

I'm not sure why they'd think it has a long "i" sound in the U.S. Looks to me like it'd be pronounced Chris-ter. Either way, yes. I think it is perfectly usable. A nice change from Christopher and Christian.
