Help[Opinions] Espérance
Esperanza and Hope, have been used as names, as have Elpis and Sperantia. However, I noticed in the database that there wasn't a French name meaning "hope." Unlike most other Romance languages (and most Western languages in general), the standard word for "hope"--espoir--is masculine, which I found rather peculiar. I did some digging in the dictionary, though, and found the less common word for hope "espérance," which is feminine. It has been submitted to the database, but not added formally, and I'm not even sure if it's actually used as a name in France (or other Francophone countries).
So, what do you think of Espérance? Good name, or trying to hard?

Sure, it's a good name.
I know a Filipina woman named Esperenza, which I'm guessing is a Spanish version of the name. (she's often called Esper.)

I love it! I think Espérance is ten times more elegant then Esperanza!

I think it's cool, although I still prefer Esperanza. It would make a neat mn, even if it isn't used in France.

I love Espérance. It's quite beautiful. And it's used in French-speaking countries, though it's quite rare - at least in France. Maybe it's more common in France's former colonial possessions such as Haiti or some of the African countries where people speak French. I have heard the more unusual French names more often in those countries than in France.

I think it's great but agree that it would be butchered down to esper-ANCE in the US... Ithink I would use it as a mn for sure!

Wow. I think it's beautiful. I've never dislike Esperanza, but I certainly didn't love it, either; it's been steadily on my "averagely like" list. Espérance, however, is positively stunning. Ironically, I've never been to wild about French names. I like a few, but not enough for my taste to lean towards French. So all in all, I think it's an excellent name, and it's not at all trying too hard. I'm sure there must be at least a couple of people in France (or other French-speaking countries) named Espérance. It only makes sense.

Acording to this website - http://tonprenom.com/esperance - there are 851 women named Espérance in France. So the name has some usage, even if it's somewhat rare.

As far as I know, "word" names (this might qualify as a virtue name) aren't really common in Francophone countries. Espérance sounds nice, but I'd say it's not a very good idea outside of a French-speaking country (it would get butchered into ess-per-ANCE with the last syllable rhyming with dance), where it wouldn't be used...
The French use Nadia and Nadine, which come from Nadezhda, a Russian name meaning "hope", though. I also like Esperanza, personally, especially when you at the very least try to use a Spanish pronunciation.

I kinda like it. It's way better than the almost harsh-sounding Esperanza.
