[Opinions] Mitzi
I never knew what this was a nickname for before, but BtN says Mitzi is a diminutive of Maria. Are there any other names that Mitzi could easily be used as a nickname for? Would it be okay to use as a full first name? It's for a story, if that makes a difference.

I've got a friend named Mitzi, though she spells it Mitzy. I assume it's her real first name, but now that you mention it I suppose it could actually be a nn for Maria, I don't know for sure. I've only ever known her as Mitzy, though, and that's all I've ever known her to go by, so I suppose it works fine as a full first name.

I really like this on a cat or dog. For humans I think it should stay a nickname. Miriam nickname Mitzi is cute. One of the reasons I like Miriam are the possible nicknames of Mitzi and Mimi.

Miriam, nn Mimi, is super cute. I can see Mitzi working as well. For some reason Mimi doesn't get much love. So I'm happy to see someone else loves it too. :-) I have a whole list of formal names for Mimi. But it sits on the shelf for want of interest. :-/

little story about MimiMimi is the most common nickname for Miriam here (but Miriam is not a trendy name, so it's all relative) and many young people associate it with a certain mouse because me and my peers learned reading with "Mimi die Lesemaus" which means "Mimi The Reading Mouse". There was a book with a little story and pictures for each letter (with a picture of Mimi on every page) and even a stuffed version of Mimi in my first grade classroom :)ETA: We didn't begin with the letter A but with the letter M, so we knew that was the letter Mimi's name started with, lol.

aw, MitziI love Mitzi because it is so 1950's-sitcom unrealistic. It's so cartoony. I always thought Mitzi could be a nn for Miriam or Margaret - I actually never thought of Maria!

"I'm gonna wash that man right outta my hair . . . "Mitzi Gaynor made me love the name Mitzi. I prefer it as a nn for Maria, but I think it could stand on its own well enough. Mitzi is spunky and feisty. Love it.Just because I love a challenge, I could also see Mitzi as a nn for:Melusine
Martine
Marlene
Artemisia
Demetria
Margarethe / Marguerite / Margalit
Fiammetta
Mehetabel
Marcelline
Domitilla

Well I'll never be able to outdo Wordsmith's list :P, but I think Mitzi is a pretty cute nn. I'm not sure if I like it as a full name though.

Lol, funny you should mention Melissa - Missy - Mitzi. My name is Melissa and I went by Missi throughout my childhood. There was a woman at my church who always called me Mitzi, no matter how much my mother or I corrected her. I hated it then, I wouldn't mind it so much now. This is a great list! I particularly like Clementine, Maritza, Matilda, and Mehitabel. :D
