[Opinions] Re: May.

I prefer the Mae spelling of the name to May. May is an auxiliary verb and as a fn always makes me think of a phrase rather than a name. For example, May Amelia. May Amelia come to our house for dinner? May Amelia sleep over tonight? It's so distracting. Plus, Mae West was so irreverent, you have to love her spunk. So for those reasons I can't quite warm up to May as a name. Spell it Mae and I'm happily on board.
I wouldn't expect anyone named May to be born in May any more than I would for April June or August, Noel or Winter. They evoke feelings more than actual birth dates, to me.
I prefer May as a nn, but it can stand on its own.
I've never met a May. But my grandmother Elizabeth Mary went by Lizzie May (I'm guessing on the spelling of both of those names. She died when my mother was very young.)
