I actually know a little girl named Mae. She is about 9 years old or so. Her grandmother's name was Mabel and I believe she is named after her. I prefer Mae as a first name over May. But both are cute. I've considered using this name. There is something just so sweet about the name Mae. I don't think it needs to be a nickname for anything. And I don't think you have to be born in May to be named May. I know plenty of people named April who weren't born in April.
