[Opinions] Pronounciation is key!
These just g to show how the way we pronounce a name sometimes makes all the difference! Tell me what you think of these names and how you pronounce them.1. I got 'Murder on the Orient Express' read on CD for Christmas (love audio books and Agatha Christie) and the man reading the book pronounced Elena and Helena like ah-lay-nah and hah-lay-nah which I really love. So I was looking at my favorites list (I have Elena & Lena on there) and was thinking how much prettier Beatrice Elena sounds when Elena is pronounced as above. Try it!
Then I thought if Elena is pronounced ah-lay-nah why can't Lena be pronounced lay-nah? If it is then Lena Viola sounds much more elegant. I've been pronouncing these names like eh-lee-nah, heh-lee-nah, and lee-nah.2. Also there was a lady name Mary Hermione, now I've always seen this name as rather ugly I suppose because I've been pronouncing it her-moy-nee but the man who read the book pronounced it her-my-ah-nee and I just thought it was so pretty! 3. Then on a TV show I saw, Hermione Baddley played a crazy old lady named Kezia. Now I've seen Keziah before and always pronounced it ke-zeye-uh and I thought is was okay, but they pronounced it kee-zee-ah which I thought was really nice!

I pronunce Elena "ay-LAY-nah" only. If you like the "ah-LAY-nah" sound, why not use Alaina or Alayna? As much as I detest both, they'd make more sense to me. Helena is heh-LAY-nah to me, and after that, heh-LEE-nah. My least favourite pronunciation is Helen-uh.I always say Lena as LEE-nah, because I'm Norwegian-American! ;) Ole and LAY-nah just wouldn't be the same. I don't like the LAY-nah pronunciation as well. Lena Violet would be a fine combo either way.Hermione is a name I don't have good associations with, since despite the fact that I'm a Harry Potter fan, I'm a David Bowie fan first. The song "Letter to Hermione" is gorgeous, but it's sad and not exactly complimentary. I like Keziah, but only pronunced keh-ZYE-ah. "KEE-zee-ah" sounds silly to me; I could see "KEH-zee-uh," but that sounds a bit uninformed, IMO. I like it, especially with the nickname Kizzie / Kizzy.Array
"Phineas. That's an interesting name."
"Yeah. It's Latin for 'kick me'."

No wonder you didn't see the beauty of Beatrice Elena, it is a lovely combo pronounced this way. One of my best friends is named Elena.

I've never though of Elena as eh-lee-nah. That would be Elina to me. I LOVE Elena said eh-LEH-nah or eh-LAY-nah.I hate the name Hermione, sorry.I don't like Keziah / Kezia either (and I believe it's supposed to be keh-ZY-ah).

I've always pronounced Elena as eh-lay-na and Lena as lay-na. I think they're prettier that way also :-)
When I first saw Hermione years ago I thought it was prnounced her-mee-own. lol, now I know better and I like it too.
I've heard Kezia/Keziah pronounced a lot of different ways. I like ke-zee-ah the best I think.

I love the name Hermione! (And you must have been watching Little House, I'm a big nerd for Little House.)
I do prn. Elena Eh-lay-na, but Lena I prn. as Lee-na. Beatrice Elena is beautiful.

Yes, I was watching 'Little House', or rather my sister was, and when I heard the name and the way they pronounced it I thought it was rather cool! :)Image hosted by Photobucket.com

I agree. I think Lena Viola does sound better with the new prn.Her-moy-nee is pretty bad, but I do like the other (original, I think) prn. That happened to me with Ismene when I first saw it. I was studying Antigone back in high school, and I thought the names were Is-mean and anti-gone like the English words. Now that I know they're Is-me-ne and Ant-ih-guh-nee I think are lovely. I probably wouldn't use them, but you get my point. Oh, and Persephone. Same problem there.

1. I've always pronounced Elena as eh-lay-nah and both heh-leh-nah and heh-lay-nah for Helena but recently I prefer heh-lay-nah. I pronounce Lena as lee-nah, mainly because I'm used to saying lee-nah when saying my username out loud (my username was spoken way before I wrote/typed it)2. The pronounciation of Hermione always stumps me, it just doesn't look like her-my-oh-nee (I don't even know what it looks like to me)3. I've always pronounced Kezia as kez-ee-ah (which is probably comepletely wrong). I'm not keen on it anyway.

"The pronounciation of Hermione always stumps me, it just doesn't look like her-my-oh-nee (I don't even know what it looks like to me)"
That's funny, because to me, now that I actually know, it looks exactly how it sounds.
Her-mi-o-ne. You just pronounce every single vowel, where normally they'd be silent. Of course, when I first read Harry Potter, I was prn. it Hermy-own.

I pronounce Elena "eh-lay-nah" and Lena as "lay-nuh" (this is how it is pronounced in Germany by the way) but I pronounce Helena like "heh-leh-nah" :-)Hermione I have always pronounced "Her-my-ah-nee"I know one person named Keziah and they pronounce it "Kez-ee-ah" I'm not sure of the actual pronounciation though!

I always (to my knowledge) say Elena as eh-lay-nah, Helena as heh-lay-nah, and Lena as lay-nah. Same pattern goes with Magdalena or Nena. I don't give any of them a long 'ee' sound.

Wow! I never thought about Magdalena or Nena being pronounced that way, I think it's so pretty! :)

I've always pronounced Elena and Helena with the lay pronounciation. As for Lena I tend to pronounce it lee-nah because of a seagull. There is a joke we have between my friends with Lena the seagull and her always watching eye. One of my friends always gets creeped out with the "Lena is watching you" so we tend to say it to only her to freak her out!

1 I prefer Elena and Lena pronounced like you say - Eh-lay-na, Lay-na. I normally say Elena like that (because I'm used to it as a Latin American name); I have to ask if Lena is Lee-na or Lay-na, but I tend to say Lee-na :-(2 I've always said her-MY-uh-nee, didn't know there was any other way.3 Kezia as Key-zee-ah seems just incorrect to me .. like the way it'd be said by someone who had learned from the Bible at home alone and never heard Keziah said aloud; kind of rustic and quaint. But I could get used to it. It'd come out Key-zhah if I had to say it often, which is rather pretty, if strange.- chazda
