I prnounce Malachy and Malachi differently.
Malachy has a long "e" sound on the end, whereas Malachi ends with a long "i" sound.
Malachy has been a top four boy's name for me for a long time. Being Irish-American, I prefer it to Malachi. But I love the biblcal, mysterious Malachi as well.
(ETA) For your Gaelic brood, Malachy (nn Mal? Mac / Mack?) would fit in beautifully.
