Message: "German" - Behind the Name

I met a man named German (with rising accent over the e). He pronounced it her-MAHN. I looked here, but all I found was German, no accent. I suspect the names are linked in some way, but I'd like more information on this particular variation.

The gentleman looked and sounded as if he were Greek, and the H sound for the G should be considered. I wanted to ask him for sure where he was born, but I thought that would be rude.

I'd appreciate some help, if anyone can offer some.

All I know about GERMAN and HERMAN(N): In Russia the (Germanic) name HERMANN is spelt (and I suppose, also pronounced) "GERMAN". I don't know where they put the stress, though.

The version that GERMAN is the Russian spelling and pronunciation of the German HERMANN does not seem to me probable.

Thare is a Russian name GERMAN, really. It originates from Latine, most probably, as explained in the database.

german is somthing different from Herman.

according to the ancient language Avesta of Iranians.
Ger means man as a result german means the mind of man.

but Her in Avesta was annoucned as light
as a result herman means the light of mind.

I'd have to hear his accent again to decide whether it could be Russian. There was a very heavy L and a thick R, so maybe.
