[Facts] Melnot?
I am looking for any information on the name Melnot. This was my great grandfather's middle name. Full name was Claude Melnot Smith. He was supposedly named after an actor who his mother was a fan of. He was born in 1897. I cannot seem to find any information on the name. Anything would be appreciated. Origin, meaning, or even something about the actor. Thanks for your help :)

Your family story has been a bit garbled, because your great grandfather doesn't seem to have been named after an actor, but rather after a character in a play. Perhaps your great-great-grandmother was fond of an actor who played the character.
Claude Melnotte is the hero of a play called The Lady of Lyons by the English author Edward Bulwer-Lytton. You can find information about the play here:

Melnotte does seem to be a real, if rare, French surname.
