I have known many over the years- either Catherine, Katherine, or Kathryn. I have never met a Katharine. Of those I've known, most went by Katie. One went by Kate. One did not use a nickname.
I have only known one Cathy- she was an exchange student from South Korea I taught during my student teaching. Cathy was the name she chose as her "American" name.
I like both Catherine and Katherine as spellings. I dislike the other spellings. I like Kate, Katie, and Kit as nicknames. I do find Cathy a bit too dated still, and I don't particularly like the sound of it.
