Meaning & History
From a South Slavic word meaning "spark".
In fact the word "iskra" is of Proto-Slavic origin (*jьskra) and thus is not limited to Southern Slavs. It is a very common word in Western Slavic languages such Polish or Czech, as well as in Eastern Slavic languages such as Russian (и̏скра) or Ukrainian. In fact the word made its way from Eastern Slavic areas all the way to Southern Europe from around today's Ukraine/Poland and it has been in use in the Macedonian language since before Alexander the Great (yes, he was a Slav, not a Greek).
The word, in the exact same meaning, is also used in Urdu and related languages, possibly a borrowing since the Macedonian conquest.
