[Opinions] Maryland and Duvae
So these are names I saw on tv over the last week. A male Maryland was on Teen Mom as a friend of one of the couples. Duvae, pronounced like a duvet cover, was a bride on Say Yes to the Dress. Her mom said they picked the name hoping she would be a comforter to the family.
Maryland - I had a clinet named Maryland who was female and in her 70's. I thought it was kind of a cool/differnt place name that was also a play on Marilyn. But I feel bad for a guy named Maryland! It has Mary in it.
Duvae - If you are going to name your daughter after a blanket, at least spell it the same. It does sound pretty though.
What are everyone else's thoughts?

I don't care for either. I agree that Maryland is a bad choice for a guy. It's not the greatest as a name for a woman either because it would probably be misheard as Marilyn since people are used to Marilyn as a first name rather than Maryland.
Duvae is just tacky. They could have at least spelled the word correctly. Who wants to be named after bedding in the first place, though?

I can't believe they actually chose the name Duvae deliberately because it sounds like duvet. I think it would be more forgivable if they didn't know duvet was a word and just liked the sound, especially since they didn't spell it the same. Wanting her to be a "comforter to the family" is just stupid!
Maryland is not really my style, but it's definitely better for a girl than a boy!

Duvae is awful.
I have heard of Maryland used as a name before, but on a woman, it doesn't work on a man. I don't think it's the worst name in the world (for a woman), as she can use Mary, but on a man. No way.
I'm from Maryland, and have said I would use Maryland as a middle name (for a girl), should I ever run out of family names to use (which is unlikely).

I think they're both naming tragedies. I think any name with land at the end should be out as a given name 'cause it sounds clunky and dorky on a person in any position other than the surname position. Duvae is just silly.
Ulcer-inducing tier names in my opinion.
