[Opinions] Madeline
Used to be one of my faves, but it got so popular. Now its popularity seems to be quickly going down however, and I might be able to use it when I have children in about 10 years.I pronounce it MAD-eh-lyn, simply because that is the English pronunciation to me. I pronounce Madeleine and Madelyn the same in English, but differently in French (Madeline and Madeleine that is).I'm not good at explaining pronunciations, but in French I pronounce them mahd-eh-LEEN (Madeline) and mahd-eh-LENN (Madeleine), but you usually don't hear the -eh, because you say it fast. So it's mahd-LEEN and mahd-LENN. Same with Catherine which is kah-TREEN because the second syllable is so short you don't hear it.Anyway in an English speaking country I'd go with MAD-eh-lyn, I find MAD-eh-line pretentious.Would people always spell it Madelyn? Would they call her Maddy? I dislike Maddy and especially Madelyn.Still too common? Opinions? How many do you know? Do any go by their full names?

I think that there are enough spellings out there right now, that it wouldn't always be Madelyn. My cousin's daughter is Madeline. But all of them seem to be Maddy/ Maddie, so some might even assume the full name is Madison. (I do know a Madison who goes by Maddy.) All of them are in elementary school, so it's hard to think of them as Madeline/ Madelyn/ Madeleine or however they spell it.

I never know how to pronounce Madeline. In general, based upon little girls I've encountered with the name, I think Madelyn is MAD-eh-lin for sure, Madeline is usually MAD-eh-line, and Madeleine is either mad-eh-LEN, mad-LEN, or MAD-eh-lin/len. My own prefered pronunciation is most like MAD-eh-len/lin. I really don't like MAD-eh-line; I think it sounds coarser than than the others. If you don't like it either, Madeline could be a risky spelling. I do think quite a few people will assume she's MAD-eh-line when reading it or Madelyn when writing it. I know 3 girls with the name quite well, and I've met many more. Every Madeline of every spelling and pronunciation that I've met seems to use Maddy/Maddie at least part of the time. I can't think of any that have gone exclusively by their full name. It's one of those nicks that's hard to avoid.

I really like Madeline but pronounced Mad-uh-line, the Mad-eh-lyn pronounciation is for Madelyn to me. I wouldn't call her Maddy but many others would

I don't think you'd have too big of an issue with the spelling. Madeline would be the first way I'd think to spell it. BUT I'm pretty sure people with automatically shorten it to Maddie / Maddy.I like Madeleine more.

I love the name. I feel like MAD eh line is the correct/proper pronounciation for Madeline. After all Carolyn and Caroline are two different names that are pronounced different. I like the MAD eh lyn pronounciation a little more so I would go with the Madelyn spelling. (This is just me. I think most people say MAD eh lyn for both Madeline and Madelyn).
I personally would only consider it for a middle name just to avoid the possibility of a Maddie.
I don't actually know any but my sister babysits for one who is under 5, a radio dj I used to listen to has one who is 2 or 3 and Madelyn Gosselin, I know of. I don't know how they spell it though.
