[Opinions] Quatermain
I am majorly crushing on this right now. Just wondering what all of you thought of it. What do you think of it hypothetically, and what about for real-life use? If you want to make combos too, feel free, I'd be curious to see them.

Yes. :)

I prefer it as a middle name because it sounds so much like a surname, but it would certainly be interesting to meet a Quatermain.Paul Quatermain was the first combo that came to mind followed by Quatermain Beauregard and Beauregard Quatermain.I'd name Quatermain's brother Beauregard or perhaps Taliesin. I could definitely imagine brothers named Quatermain and Beauregard.

Paul Quatermain is nice, but Quatermain Beauregard (or vice versa) is totally a showstopper.

My first thought was watermain. It's an interesting name, but I can't see the appeal myself. It just looks too much like a compound word to me (quarter + main).

Eh. I'm not a fan, I guess. The "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" connection makes it sort of cheezy to me, even though I did like the steampunkish Sean Connery version. All in all, I don't like the sound, and I think it's trying too hard to be different...like really trying, teeth-gritted-and-beads-of-sweat-on-the-brow level of trying.

lolwutThat sounds like some type of meat.

Haha, I can see where you could think it sounded that way. It also makes me think of quarter horse. And water main.

It's definitely intriguing. It has a sort of strange unusual nature and charm that I'd consider a guilty pleasure if not really hugely adore, if my brain didn't insist on illogically associating the name with the words 'hind' and 'flanks'. I have no idea why.I can't see it as a first name, but I think it has certain middle name potential, in the right combo.

HmmmmI like the way it sounds but it is too long for me. I have an 8 letter name myself and I get tired of writing it :)

Allan Quatermain. Bad 80's Richard Chamberlain movies.

Have you seen the movie from 2003ish? With Sean Connery? Not bad. ;)

You know, I didn't, and I can't remember why I was turned off it so much. I remember seeing a trailer in the theatre and deciding I was definitely not interested in it. I think I just thought it looked like a bad film. Is that how you were introduced to the name? Connery is not my thing, but I could see how it might change my feelings about the name if he were. lol

Haha, indeed. Yes, that was how I was first introduced to the name. I've never read the Victorian stories or the graphic novel.

They were an adaptation of Victorian short stories.

I know.Doesn't change the image; if anything it makes it weirder because the stories seem so un-PC now.

Fair enough!

I've never heard of it before. Do you say KWAY-ter-mane or KWAH-ter-mane? Or am I way off? It looks like a last name to me - neither a positive nor a negative really, just an observation. It seems like it would need a cool nickname, but there aren't any jumping out at me. Maybe you should first let me know how it's pronounced first. :) It would make a pretty wicked middle name, regardless!

'Quarter-Main' but without the first 'r'!

Yep, that's how it's said in The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Although it comes out mostly sounding like quarter main still.
vote up1
Darn. I liked Equator without the 'e' better.

It sounds okay. I really don't have any complaints about how it sounds or how it's spelled--I actually think it's kind of cool. But I would never use it. It's too....odd, I guess.

I don't like it. It just looks like a surname and I don't think it is at all useable in real life. What nicknames would you use ? (I think its far to long for day-to-day use really)For some reason the T looks weird - I spent a while working out whether it was spelt wrong somehow. Also it looks like the word "squatter" to me.

I think Main would be a great nn. I think it would get misspelled/heard/read as Quartermain, though. I thought that's what the character's name was until I saw it written down once.
vote up1
Yes, Quartermain looks MUCH better to me!

This is an epic name. Of course, I only know of it from The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Which is cool enough for me. I'd use it in real life. Why not. Why NOT I say. I know people named Kyzyl, Jzero, Terrakian, and Indi. Why not Quartermain?Comboing, let me seeeee. It needs something super old-world and vampire-killer-yQuartermain Vaughn
Quartermain Xavier
Quartermain Dexter
Quartermain Ward
Quartermain Roscoe
Quartermain Lucius
Quartermain Clark
Quartermain Cornelius
Quartermain Godric
Quartermain Kentigern
Quartermain Rex
Quartermain Merrick

I've been thinking of it since a friend of mine said she's planning on using it if her baby is a boy (my friend who has all epicly named boys). I love The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, good association.Yes, old-world and vampire-killer-y indeed. But when I tried to make combos I couldn't think of anything like that, and was going more for super-adventurer's sidekick names. I ended up best liking tweedy things, it felt all steampunk action-adventure. But! Quatermain Ward! How did I skip over that?! I love it!

omgplease tell me this is meant for the brother of Peregrin, Archimedes and D'Artagnan.

Yes. :)

I only think of the character and The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (it also reminds me of Quatermass!) - is it a real name? Either way, I think it would be a bit ridiculous as a fn for a real person. Hell of a name, though.

Yep yep, that's what it's from! I'm not sure if it's a real name outside of the character.

I think it would be an awesome name for a character! Or a fish.
In real life I think it's best as a middle name, since it's so long and uncommon.
What's the meaning/origin? It makes me think "quarter main (hand in french)", so a quarter of a hand? I'm liking it as a mn with shorter fn's, like these:Johannes Quatermain
Etienne Quatermain
Silas Quatermain
Padraig Quatermain
Elias Quatermain
Harry Quatermain
Oliver Quatermain
Olivier Quatermain
Alder Quatermain
Nicolas Quatermain
Ian Quatermain
Peter Quatermain
Pierre Quatermain
Jean-Pierre Quatermain
Victor Quatermain
Lucard Quatermain

I don't know what the actual etymology is, but Allan Quatermain is a literary character. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Allan_QuatermainI quite like Padraig Quatermain, Harry Quatermain, Alder Quatermain, Nicholas Quatermain, and Ian Quatermain.
