Cyril has been on my mind the last couple of days. What do you think of him? Combinations?

And what about variants Kiril ("keer-EEL") and Kira ("KEER-uh")? Or any other variants you know of?

It's hard for me to see or hear that name w/out thinking of Cyril Sneer/Snear (sp?) from "The Raccoons" tv series. Kinda ruins the name for me... not that it would have grabbed me in the first place anyway.

Squirrels and racoons today -- lol.

OK. Well we have racoons in our yard as well as squirrels. You and insane romantic have inspired me to name at least one of them Cyril. :-)

Have you seen the show The Raccoons? Cyril wasn't 1 of the raccoons... He was a self-centered jerk the raccoons were trying to defend the forest against.
Saw insaneromantic's post and agree that the Kira / Keira concept is quite girly.

Cyril has been near and dear to me since I was about 14. It doesn't stand out a lot, but it's very kind and very smart, and has an understated handsomeness. And wears a scarlet cape. :)

All my Cyril combos are old, but I still love a few of them:
Cyril Alphonsus
Cyril Awen - (means "muse" in Welsh), love this combo
Cyril Delwyn
Cyril Eamonn
Cyril Eugene
Cyril Finnian - like this still too
Cyril Franklin - this was my original favorite

As for variants, Kiril is nice, but I'm not super into Russian names. Cyrillus is nice, too.

Cyril Proinsias is to die for handsome. (*swoon*) Cyril Eamonn too. And how did you know that Eugene was also on my mind lately? He's found a true friend in Cyril. Cyril Ignatius is a bad little boy and is leading Cyril Alphonsus astray. Mega-fun.

How do you pronounce Awen? "AH-wen?" Like Owen but with an "ah" sound? I love the meaning.

I don't like Cyril at all, it's really outdated. Also it sounds like "squirrel"!

Kira is more of a girls name to me, because Keira is so popular.

Oh, I agree. Kira is all female. I'm sorry if I didn't make that clear in my original post.

I never made the squirrel connection with Cyril before. We have some in our yard so perhaps I'll name one Cyril. :-)

When we went camping last year there were loads of squirrels, which my younger cousins and I named Cyril, Cecil and Basil

I'm sure this is not a legitimate variant, but Kyril is the name of the main hero in the RPG Suikoden Tactics (http://www.suikosource.com/games/gst/). I love the Suikoden game series, and there are many, MANY characters, so several names are tied to it in my mind. Kyril is pronounced like Cyril but with a hard K sound (KEER-ill). I really like it and prefer it to the soft C of Cyril, even if it isn't a real name.

Kira is nice, but I don't like the spelling Keira because I can't stand Keira Knightley. Kira, with this spelling, makes me think of Kira Nerys from Star Trek: Deep Space Nine. I'm a Trekkie, so that's a much better association.

Ah, yes. But you see the reason you don't care for Keira has nothing to do with Ms Knightly. You are clever enough to pick up on the misspelling of the Anglicized form of Ciara ("KEER-uh") which should be Kiera, not Keira. It's the namenerd in you I'm sure of it. :-P

Seriously, I do understand about associations tainting (or helping) a name. Luckily good ol' Kira is there for you and the Star Trek reference is fun.

Cyril is just fabulous. I have a character named Cyril.
It makes me think of Oscar Wilde's son.

I don't know how to correctly pronounce Kyrylo, but it looks super awesome.
I like Cy for short as well, but the only thing cooler than Cyril is Cyryl because two Y's looks crazier/cooler than one. I can't believe I just said that.

Hmmm. If Kiril is "keer-EEL" then I would guess that Kyrylo is "keer-EEL-o." But of course that's just a guess. I hope it's correct because Kyrylo is very intriguing.

Hmm. I don't like Cyril much, and that surprises me some. I like a number of similar names, like Cedric, Cyrus, and even Cecil. Cyril sounds a little wormy, for lack of a better term--sort of slippery and wriggly.

I love Kira. It has a totally different vibe, though.

I adore Cecil. I'd suggest it more, but here in the U.S. the "SEES-l" pronunciaiton really bugs me. :-/

I agere about Kira having a different vibe. It's interesting how two related names can do that.

I like Cyril, I prefer it spelled "Cyrile" or it doesnt look complete to me. I dont like it with a K noise but its a very nice classic name that would work well at any age! I have seen Cyrilla on another site but I dont like it very much.

Yeah, I agree. There's something weird about Cyrilla. It sounds like something in a petrie dish to me. (My apologies to any Cyrillas out there.)

I don't know why, but I'm not wild about Cyril. It doesn't make sense because I really like Cyrus which is close-but-not-exactly.

I do like Kiril (or Kirill) however, and Kira. Great, strong, sturdy names.

It's interesting. My brain tends to classify it among the names an American would call "stuck-up stereotypical British names" :P
I've never met any, so when I see it I think SY-ril and then have to correct myself ("no, SEER-il").
I like Kiril. Kira's on my 'would use' list for girls...
In general I prefer Cyrus (and Cerdic, which gives me a similar vibe for some reason) but I wouldn't be dissapointed if I saw someone named Cyril (mainly because I've never met one before).

Cyrus is great too. I'm always torn whether or not the nn Cy is better for a Cyrus or a Cyril. Cerdic is new to me, thanks! Neat.

I'm a (North) American and I'm very stuck-up. So Cyril fits me to a tee. :-D I'm glad someone else is open to him.

Lucky daughter to get Kira for a name.
