That's one of my recent name sightings.
I met her at work, she was a woman in her late 30s or early 40s. And I had never heard of Comfort as a name before.
You see, where I live, Comfort doesn't work all too well as a name because in my language "Komfort" only means "convenience", the meaning of "consolation; solace" is completely missing. Not much of a virtue name here ;-)
This woman, however, was born and raised in an English-speaking country.
To be perfectly honest, I don't know what I think of this name. I certainly find it interesting, though.
So, what do you think of it?

I definitely wouldn't use it... esp. living in post-war Japan... ah-hem... However, even w/out that association I think it sounds rather odd as a name.

When I was a kid I read a book set in England just after the Napoleonic Wars I think, when slavery was still legal but there was mounting opposition to it. Two characters were little sisters, white English girls, who went to stay with their cousins and were horrified to be met by a black servant - who in spite of their worst fears is not a slave! Her name was Dinah, and the sisters were Comfort and Mercy, giving them a pleasantly Puritanical air.
Comfort could well have been taken to Africa as a missionary name, a few decades later.

I worked with a woman named Comfort. It was an interesting name to say the least, lol.

I hate it, to be honest. I immediately think of comfort women and comfort stations, so it's uncomfortably tied to rape and sexual slavery in my mind. It's on my list of word names that sound nice but are unusable.

It's not at all something I would choose - for many reasons, one of which is that it's a fabric conditioner here. But I know one, and she's just such a great person that I've grown to sort of like it. Her folks are from Ghana - I just looked it up and all of the Comforts born in England and Wales in the last 30-odd years have African last names, so maybe it was trendy over there for a while.

I think it's easy to joke about, and I wouldn't bestow it upon my child. It's not terrible, though.

I know someone with Comfort as a surname. Her first name is also a word and she got a lot of compliments for it.

There was a female hip-hop dancer a few seasons ago on So You Think You Can Dance, and she is my only "experience" with it as a name. I think it seems kind of tacky. But I agree it is interesting.
