[Facts] I need some information on the name Taran please! (m)
Under submitted names on the BtN database. I encountered the name Taran. Which I like for a boy name. The discription of the meaning provided stated this, derived from To' or Thor (Norse God of Thunder and unn - love, so orginally Torunn the name means "little love of Thor".
Is this accurate? Does the name mean love or thunder? Guess Im looking for the actual meaning of the name.
Thank you in advance for any information anyone has.

I noted the meaning of Taran as thunder, but not the origin - and can't find my name book at the moment, unfortunately.
I just wanted to point out that while Taran might be a masculine name, Torunn is not. Also, the information that I found says that Torunn means "Tor's darling", which I guess is the same as "love of Thor" (not sure where you got 'little' from). Anyway, Torunn is a feminine name and the user-submission that states that Taran is a form of Torunn also says Taran is a feminine name.
I think it's more correct to assume that Taran is a Welsh name, at least if you're looking for the meaning and origin of the masculine name Taran.

Taran is the main character in the series The Chronicles of Prydain by Lloyd Alexander, where most of the characters' names are from Welsh mythology. According to Wikipedia, Taran's name is also from the Mabinogion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mabinogion), where Taran is the name of the father of a man named Glineu. It's is the Welsh word for thunder*, and may be related to the Gaulish god Taranis.

I have seen Taran used as a female name in Norway. I went to school with a Taran who was from Norway.
Taran are both female and male first names in Norway. Torunn is female.
