[Opinions] Pronunciation of Hypatia?
Can anyone shed some light on the pronunciation of Hypatia? I am undecided if the meaning is too pretentious, but I think it has aesthetic appeal, and a great historical connection. Thoughts?

'hie-PAY-shuh'
I think the historical namesake is interesting, but it's too much to burden a child with.

I pronounce it as "Hee-pah-tee-ya" (shortly).
I'd pronounce it high-PAY-sha, like the other posters. It will always remind me of my favourite film "Agora" and its wonderful heroine, though I wouldn't be too keen on seeing it on a real person.
Well, I can't speak for how it's actually supposed to be pronounced, but I say it as hie-PAY-shuh.
Me too.
I taught a girl named Hypatia about four years ago, and that's how she pronounced it too.
Ignore....double post

Same here.
I've always thought it was pronounced hie-PAY-shuh.
