[Opinions] Ammon?
What do you think? This was my great-great-grandfather's name, and I've been saying is much like Eamon, though looking it up on here, I've found that it's more closely pronounced Ah-mun. I wouldn't want to butcher the pronunciation, but I also don't like Ah-mun (Or the one-m, Amon).Thoughts?:)

It's a very common name in Utah (from the Book of Mormon) as long as it's spelled Ammon. The youngest son of a friend was given that name. When she first told me, I was confused because I figured it was an Egyptian-based name (like Amon-Ra etc.) and that just didn't seem to fit in with all the other boys. And they do pronounce it ah-mun more or less.

I like it. I prefer Amon (and Eamon, and Aemon) but I like Ammon too.
I'm not sure about how easy it would be to use Ammon prn. like Eamon... it seems counterintuitive to me, and I think it would be easier with Amon (Ammon makes me want to say AM-on, like the word "am") but if you corrected people they'd probably get it.

At first look I pronounced it like Eamon. I dislike both names sorry

Ammon is cool! That's very handsome. I'd be likely to pronounce Amon to rhyme with Damon.Eamon has always just sounded like semen to me, though if it weren't for that I could see the appeal.

Sorry to butt in, but Eamon / Eamonn is a favorite of mine and I wanted to make sure there wasn't a misunderstanding. It's pronounced, "AY-mun," not "EE-mun." So it doesn't rhyme with semen. You're free to still dislike it, of course.

Really? I had no idea. I've never actually looked up the pronunciation because it looked so intuitive. Go figure. Well all right then. So Eamon rhymes with Damon? Geez, I gotta be on the lookout for those Irish tricksters.

That's the whole point of Irish names -- to keep people guessing. :-P

If it's a family name I wouldn't alter the spelling. If you don't like the "ah" sound of Ammon then I'd keep it in the mn position. I dislike mispronunciaitons almost as much as misspellings. That said, I adore the name Eamonn / Eamon. But I can see why you'd want to stick with the family name instead. If you use Eamonn / Eamon, just don't try to pass it off as a family name. That's cheating. :-P

I definitely wouldn't cheat, haha! I'm very strict about pronunciation, and spelling. I like the sound of Eamon so much more. Too bad it isn't a family name.

Well, you could make Eamon a family name by using it. :-) That's not cheating.

Weeeird.... I literally JUST now came across this name at www.freecrappyportraits.com
I would assume to pronounce Ammon as "AM-un" and Amon as "AY-mun"The "AH-mun" pronunciation sounds too close to "amen" and "Amun-Ra" - not bad associations necessarily. "Ah-mun" does seem to be the correct pronunciation though

Weird for me too. I just (10ish minutes ago) started reading a book about rocks and fossils. "Ammonites (right) were named after the Egyptian god Ammon," is a sentence I read on the 3rd page.Anyways, I really like the name Ammon. I think it's quite handsome with the Ah-mun pronunciation.

Hmm, I've never seen Amon spelled Ammon. I don't like the way Amon looks, but Ammon isn't bad. I would assume it's pronounced AH-mun, that's how I've always heard Amon said.
