[Opinions] Darryl / Darrel
My husband recently hired someone named Darrel and I started laughing. I know it's a perfectly legit name but it has a comic feel to it. All I can think of are Darryl & Darryl from Newhart. Plus it just has an odd sound to it.What do you guys think? Is it usable? The only times I've heard it were on TV shows - Bewitched & Newhart, then just recently my husband hired someone with the name and I discovered an online friend's husband had the name. My friend's husband siblings are:
Tina
Kent
Vance
Tracee
LeeVance has the feel of Darrel / Darryl.

I don't like Darryl/Darrel much at all. I do like some similar names, though. Like Darren, which I think is vastly better than Darrel.

I don't like it at all! I think it's a sound thing -- the "uhl" sound in the final syllable is not the most attractive. I dislike Rachel for the same reason. And I agree that it does sound somewhat comical.

to me it's an ill rather than an uhl.

I quite like Darryl actually. Not fond of the Darrel spelling though. I wouldn't compare Vance w/ Darryl at all. Darryl is a ligit fn. Vance is a surname gone fn and much less common as a fn, I believe. Quite like the name Darryl in the combos Takahiro Darryl and Darryl Hirotaka. I wouldn't be incl. to even make a pair w/ Vance. Darryl has a good meaning. Vance is acceptable, but less than exciting.

I think of the character Daryl Dixon from "The Walking Dead" series. Not a bad association.

Reminds me of Darryl Strawberry: Daaa-ryl...Daaa-ryl...

Who's Darryl Strawberry?

Thanks... That explains why I didn't know who he was... my blatant lack of interest in pro-baseball.

I know a 20 year old (male) Daryl, I don't really like it, but I think it's usable.

Before I opened your post, I also first thought of Darryl and Darryl, brothers of Larry, from Newhart. I think it's unusable for me just because it makes me want to giggle. In the bigger picture, as part of a generation that will probably never see Newhart, it's usable, but I don't much like the sound of it. I think both Tina and Vance have a Darrylesque feel.

Funniest thing - Darryl's stepdad was Larry. And Darryl wanted to name his son Darryl - so they would have been Larry, Darryl & Darryl, just as father / son / grandson.

modern blended families... and of course, w/ the plethora of blended fams these days, sometimes w/ both parents coming in w/ 1 or 2 children of the same name (usually more common names like Joshua or Rebecca though), it would technically be possible to get a "yours, mine and ours" situation where both parents came in w/ a son named Darryl and w/ a sick sense of humour decide that new baby together is going to be Larry... Or you could have Lara,Darla and Darla, which would be even more random since hardly anyone names their kids Darla.
