"Nyree" is a phonetic spelling of the New Zealand Maori name "Ngaire". www.babynames.com claims that the name means "flaxen", but other sources claim that it means "kiwi". And, of course, it was New Zealand actress Nyree Dawn Porter who made the name popular after appearing in the television production of *The Forsyte Saga*.

That's odd... I *thought* I'd found a reference to "Ngaire" at Babynames.com, but when I double-checked this morning it said it wasn't in their database.
I guess you can scratch off that meaning of "flaxen", then. It didn't sound right to me, anyway, as I can't imagine the Maori tribe having that many blonde baby girls born to them. I'd go with the meaning of "kiwi" for that name. :)

I was given this name as a child, apparently it was the name of my uncles girlfriend at the time. I new the origin of my name, but I was told that it meant sea.
