[Opinions] Aretha
I was just at the mall and heard a mom call a little girl (about 3?) Aretha! What do you think of the name?

Although it isn't a name I would use myself, I can appreciate it. It sounds amiable and energetic. Unfortunately, it reminds me of the word "uretha."

Cute!
True that it sounds like urethra, but that didn't come to my mind. People don't frequently say the word urethra in normal conversation.
The only thing that puts me off it is just the sound in my accent - urrr-Etha. I just prefer names with their first syllable stressed.

what comes to my mind...Is something that makes your throat all sticky and covered with white crud and you hack and gargle to get it out.

I think only one person in the world can carry off the name Aretha. And that's Aretha Franklin. It's kind of like Elvis or Madonna, it's so closely associated with just one person I can't picture it on anybody else.I don't really like the name Aretha, it sounds like a disease.

Now that you mention it, it DOES sound like "urethra." Great visual.

I agree completely. I want to like Aretha. I love the meaning and the way it looks written down. I just can't escape the urethra association.

I find it....gutteral somehow. Not pretty sounding at all.

It's diva day on BtN!First Whitney, now Aretha. ;)As a name, I can't help but equate it with Ms. Franklin, so I have a hard time picturing it on a small child. I'd have to meet one. It IS pretty, though.

The first time I heard this name...I think it was in the country song 'American Girl.' It was indeed in reference to Aretha Franklin, and at the time I was too young to know who she was. I thought it was an ugly blister of a name, but that was little me. I really like it now, it's very mature and emotionally strong.
