Well, Matisse is real the way Monet, Picasso, Beckett, Brontë, and Presley are real. They're the last names of famous figures adopted as first names. Most of them don't have much of a history of use as first names until recently. For me, they (and most other "last names as first names") fall into a sort of nebulous territory of naming where they're real but not legit. Matisse and Monet are both all right. I wouldn't use either one unless I was a big, big fan of the artist, but that's just me.
