Help[Opinions] Wdyto Gentry
I met someone recently with this name, he explained his parents were kind of hippies back in the day and named him that. Still, when I first heard it I thought it was a little pretentious but he was a nice guy so I'm starting to warm up to it. Thoughts? Combo ideas?

Just checked... it's actually on a name site
I did a search for Gentry and found it on a name site listed for either gender, but more common for girls... go figure. I wouldn't do it.

I like the sound, but I don't get why hippies would like it. It seems kind of anti-hippie. Unless they were trying to be subversive by being non-gentrified and using the word anyways? Like name rebellion?
Anyways. I like the sound. It's very gentle sounding. If only it didn't mean what it does. It just seems really odd to use a social class as a name.
Actually Peasant has a nice sound too... but I doubt that will be a cool name any time soon. Or Serf! that's really energetic, no?

Used to work with him. I had quite the crush. I think it works better on a boy than a girl, but I am still not a fan. Crush or no crush.

I only know one Gentry, and she spells it Gentri. I have no idea why her parents named her this, but I think they probably just liked the sound without thinking a lot about the meaning. A lot of parents do that. And yes, this Gentri is Southern as well... I wonder why it is regionally popular...

I was going to say-Gentry seems a little too pretentious/aristocracy-related to be a true hippie name.

Umm why would hippies name their kid "Gentry"? Doesn't the concept of gentry run against everything hippies stand for?
I think it's a totally ridiculous name since it literally means - not abstractly represents but LITERALLY MEANS - landed aristocracy. It's worse than Noble, even - at least Noble has been abstractly conceptualized to represent general goodness. Not GENTRY.

I've heard of a few little girls (through boards and BAs) named Gentry. I really, really hate when people use a word as a name just because they like the sound. That's why we end up with kids named Felony, Vanity, and Tyranny.

Yeah, it's pretty ironic considering dad's a musician (he was actually part of a famous band in the 60s and 70s) and his mom's a painter. To some it up though, they don't have much money at all. Maybe they just liked the sound? I do like it better on a guy though, even if it makes him sound as if he's trying too hard to be pretentious.

It's an unusual choice for anyone, 'hippie' parents especially. It seems silly as a name.
