This is a name that I don't really like, but I don't really dislike either. It's an odd one to me! On the one hand, I appreciate its simplicity, and the visual and aural aesthetics of the name are very pleasing. On the other hand, it reminds me too strongly of supermodels, probably because of Gemma Ward, and that's not my favorite association ever.

It's rather dated where I am (UK) as it was very popular in the '70s and '80s. It seems rather insubstantial, doesn't really do anything for me I'm afraid.A few people have said it might be confused with Emma. Both names were popular at the same time in Britain and there were several Emmas and Gemmas at my school and I'm not aware of any of them having their names muddled up, but I could be wrong.

Love it, always have! My only problem with the name is how well it will work on an older lady. It would probably be fine though.

I really like Gemma! I never give it much thought because my best friend sort of "claimed" it in high school. And even though I know she has new favorites now it still would seem like stealing for some reason. Anyway, yeah it would probably be on my list if not for that

I really like it. It's a friendly sounding, sophisticated name. One drawback is that it's close to Emma, which is super popular. People might call a Gemma Emma by mistake. Another is that some people might try to pronounce it with a hard "G", but I'd say that most won't given that most people are familiar with the word "gem."

I think Gemma is a very nice name, and underused (at least, where I'm from). I like it even better when it is paired with a very Italian middle name. Hmmmm... Gemma Artemisia...

Love Gemma.Gemma is known, but not overly used and easy to spell. I love the sound of it, so very soft. The only possible negative that I could think of is the similarity in sound to Emma, which is uber-popular right now, at least where I live. So Gemma might not *sound* as fresh as she otherwise might. But that's not the worst thing I've ever thought about a name, by far.

I really like Gemma. In fact, I'll likely use it for my next kitty!Positives: Love the look of it; the nn Gem; love the meaningNegatives: too close to Emma (may not be distinct enough); reminds me of jammin' somewhat (not that that's awful) and germ (really working hard here to find a negative, though, since I clearly like the name)

I really like the name Gemma. It always reminds me of Gemma Ward and how she was my favorite model for the longest time. It is a positive association for me.The only real negative I can think of is a child being teased because of the names similarity to words like 'gym' and 'germ'.
