[Opinions] Janvier
I've just been really loving the idea of Janvier on a boy lately. What do you think? Too hard to pull off in the US? Also, I like Avril for a boy - thoughts?

Has it ever been used as a name? I can't see it as one, since I took French for years and know it's the word for January. I've heard of people named January and I feel the same way about it.
Avril doesn't work on a boy, in my opinion. It may be because I don't care for the idea of "reclaiming" most male names that have become female, but also because of the obvious association with Avril Lavigne and a much less obvious one - Anne's novel "Averil's Atonement" in Anne of Green Gables (I loved those books as a kid). :)

I don't personally know of anyone who carries the name but I'm sure it's a possibly, seeing as, as you mentioned, there are people out there with month names. I just love the sound of it and thought since it's so close to Javier, and that January IS used as a name, that it could be doable
Javier I like. Janvier not so much. (prn'd totally differently, I know) With Americans often being more familiar with Span. than Fr., I suspect Javier would also have a better chance of being prn'd correctly.
Avril should be left on a girl... lumping Avril on a boy is pretty much inviting hassles of people seeing the name and assuming girl and constantly having to explain to people why he has a girls' name.
Plus too many month names in the same fam can look kinda tacky. Some month names on their own even look tacky on a person imo. May is fine on a girl and despite not liking them, Augustus and Julius or Julian and June can also be acceptable names on people. A little girl named Avril or April would be nice... then maybe something you can associate w/ a month on a boy w/out being outright obvious about it. The other month names just seem a little strange on people. Then again, I also find En. days of the week as tacky names for people.

Would you pronounce Janvier in the French way? Otherwise he'd be known as Jan, I imagine. Might or might not bug you.
Avril for a boy does seem like a stretch, but there was a South African rugby captain a long time ago (early 60s?) whose name was Avril Malan; apparently a huge bruiser of a bloke. So there are precedents ... and Avril on a boy seems to me much better than April on a girl!

I would use the French pronunciation. I have NEVER liked April on a girl and Avril just doesn't sound all that feminine to me so I'm glad you can at least see where I'm coming from :)
I don't think Avril would work on a boy at all in the US- then again, I pretty much always associate the name of a pop culture figure to whatever gender that figure is (poorly worded, sorry); since most people will associate it with the celebrity, I think it's just easier.
I like Janvier, and I think it works for a boy. But be careful- it's definitely got the kind of sound that would have droves of mini van moms using it on their newborn daughters after meeting a little boy Janvier!

Interesting!
I love Janviere for a girl already, although I never thought of it for use in the U.S. Janvier for a boy seems to be pushing that envelope even farther. I don't think it's usable, until I meet one. :-)
A friend of mine named her U.S. son Jean-Paul, with the French pronunciation. And you know something? It works. I would still keep Janvier for a boy's mn though.
I do not like Avril for a boy. At all. I love, love it for a girl and I'm sticking with my story.
