I'm going to be in the minority here. No, I don't think it's horrible on a girl! I love the meaning and the sound of the name. I think it would work fine on a female. I wouldn't cringe at all if I met a girl/woman named Finlay. As to the spelling, I prefer Finlay.

If "gender switching" (for lack of a better term) were a two-way street, I might be more open to the idea. But I'm old enough to have seen numerous traditionally male names "turned" (again, for lack of a better term) feminine. Once they "turn" they never seem to go back. And the pool of masculine names has always been smaller for boys than girls to begin with. It's frustrating.

Think of the parents, like you, who were looking for *something a little different.* They consulted the baby name books (always a dicey option) and found a traditional male name that they fell in love with: Finlay. Fast forward ten years and now Finlay is being used on little girls.

While I never say never, I say "almost never." And Finlay isn't one I'm willing to give to "Team Girl." Sorry. [And Finlay is definitely the spelling I prefer. For your son. ;-P]

Well, you aren't alone... Finley is more popular for a girl in the US.

I adore the nn Fin for a girl, too! I usually use Josefina to get it, though. (I'm talking about in my stories, of course)

I don't like it for a girl. How about Finella, Finola or Finnuala nn Fin?
