[Opinions] Linda
Yes, Linda is very dated. But, if you can think of it apart from its datedness, do you like it? In other words, if you were alive in the year circa 1940, before Linda became so popular and long before it became dated, do you think you would have liked it?Do you think it could make a comeback?

It probably won't make a comeback anytime too soon, but it's not unattractive. It's actually still in the top 1000 and I'm not totally surprised, It doesn't feel quite as dated to me as the names that were high ranking around the same time (Donna, Brenda, Pamela, Cheryl, etc.) I'm not really sure why it doesn't feel that way. I'm sitting here thinking about it and I know it SHOULD, but it doesn't. Hm.I liked Lynda when I was younger (like, elementary school young).

Being that Linda's a Span. word for beautiful and is also used as a name in some Latino cultures might add to its appeal in some circles in American culture and maintaining its pressence on the charts...Just had a look at it and Linza is a cool variant of it.

It's nice. Kinda boring, but nice and respectable... It may make a comeback if lots of people decide to name children after aunts and grandmothers w/ the name.
I kinda like the Lynda sp. better. It doesn't excite me, but it would be refreshing on a child in the midst of all the current trends.

I don't mind it. Not something I'd use though.

There were so many mid-century Lindas, I won't be surprised if it makes a limited comeback in the future, particularly as an honoring middle name. Even if I ignore Linda's datedness and my own negative family associations, I don't find it pretty, and I probably never would have. I don't like the -inda part. I can tolerate it in Melinda, Belinda, and, to a lesser extent, Lucinda, but Linda just tanks for me overall.I like Lynn more. Lindy, too.

All I can see are floral blouses, rolled hair, and polyester pants. Ick. I don't know... this name just seems like the equivalent of unsweetened tea after all the ice has melted and it's watery and gross. Don't ask me why I have this bizarre association, but I always have. Maybe Lipton? Anyway, I'm trying to examine it without my prejudices but I'm failing. It's just ugly.Lindy is sort of cute in a cartoon character sort of way.

I like it fine, but it's the name of my stepmother, and she's...well, never mind her.

I have a very positive family association with Linda, because it's the name of my older sister (actually my half-sister, but I never think of her that way) and she's a really wonderful person. I don't think that just because she's my sister because I have two other (full) sisters, and while I love both of them, I see their faults and don't think that they are as great a person as Linda is.The fact that I've always thought that she is so great of a person never really made me like her name, though, perhaps just due to its datedness and the fact that she herself doesn't like it. My mother, of course, just loved it. But I got to thinking of her and got to thinking of her name and started wondering if she doesn't have a nice name after all and maybe we all just dismissed her name because it's out of style (same as mine) so that's why I made the post.Linda has suffered for the past few years from trigeminal neuralgia, probably the most painful non-fatal disease there is, and she had surgery for it last year, which I heard solved the problem, but I haven't talked to her in so long, since before she had the surgery, and now I feel very emotional and I'm going to call Linda tonight (just recently got her number) and check on her and tell her that I like her name!Sorry for the OT ramble, I just feel sentimental and nostalgic.

That's okay. I don't mind rambling. ;)I like my stepmother, but she has problems. I'm the type of person who has a hard time liking a name if I know a bearer who kind of "taints" it, even though I should get past that. But that's just me.

Agree with tainting. I don't like the very popular "Isabelle", however it's spelled, due to a personal connection with a disliked Isabelle.

I hate Laura, which almost everyone thinks is beautiful, because of a Laura I disliked intensely.

It's cute, but I wouldn't use it myself. I have a (much older) friend named this.I guess it might make a comeback eventually, like Emma did, becoming "old-fashioned" instead of "dated".

Agree with Nyx. Lina is fine, but Linda feels somehow heavy at the end, and I can't see it having a resurgence any time soon. Maybe in 2040?lol now I have to go and see what I would have chosen if I was naming a kid in 1940.:)

No, I don't think I ever would have liked it. It just sounds so heavy to me. It's the -da ending. I don't think I like many names that end in that sort of sound.

I always liked it, and I actually know two young Lindas. One is a Mexican girl about eight who goes to the school where Valerie's kindergarten is. Very pretty girl too.
The other is in her early twenties and delivers pizzas for Domino's. My SIL went to school with her. This Linda actually goes by her middle name, Sue, but before, she was always called Linda Sue.I'm told Linda is popular among young Amish women now too.

Such a pity that there was such an avalanche of Lindas unleashed upon the world all at once. But simply as a name, stripped of associations, it really is lovely. In 1940, other things being equal, I'd quite probably have used it! I don't expect it'll ever come back in great numbers - that moment's past - but it would be very nice to meet a young one.Maybe the other great avalanche that was Lindsay was a kind of jazz variation on Linda, in which case it would serve to delay Linda's comeback. I think of them as totally different, but I bet most folks don't.

I wouldn't associate the 2.

One of my favorite teachers is named Linda from back in grade school. There was also a teacher I didn't like named Linda but my favorite teacher completely outshines her. I like the name, I have a lot of trouble imagining it on a little girl but I feel like it could be due for a comeback. Definitely not now while this whole princess-y theme seems to be in. Maybe if that theme starts to play with Melinda, Belinda, Rosalinda, there will be a Linda comeback? Kind of a slight chance but you never know. It kind of reminds me of the name Martha but I feel like Martha could make a comeback much sooner.

I like Linda. It is a friendly sounding name and I think it is much nicer than plain Lynn. I slightly prefer Belinda, which is also quite dated though. I think Linda will definitely make a comeback one day but not for a long time. Maybe one of my great-grandchildren will be a Linda...
