I was watching a behind the scenes interview for Game of Thrones and the art director's name was Ashleigh, a British man in his late 30's, early 40's. I get that this is a popular spelling for girls and Ashley is still considered a boy's name in England, but spelled this way?

I know at least a dozen female Ashleys and a single male Ashley - all under 30. All of them are American; even the guy is. And I knew an Ashlee who was a real pain in the ass.
I don't like Ashleigh. While I can see Ashley on a boy, I can't see Ashleigh. If you want to use it for a boy, stick to the original spelling.
(I like Ashley for both genders - I slightly prefer it on girls since one of my close friends is a female Ashley.)

I actually remember hearing this was a more traditional male spelling.

Ashleigh is an abomination for a girl, as it is. The name is Ashley, it started out as a male name, but I can see why it became a female name, as it does sound feminine to me. There was never any reason to tart it up by spelling it Ashleigh, though many people did. I feel like those who chose to spell it Ashleigh were saying, "Ashley doesn't *quite* do it for a girl, we have to pretty it up", which, if they really felt that way, they should have trashed Ashley anyway.
So is there any justification for spelling it Ashleigh for a BOY? No, none. If I were a male Ashleigh, I'd so change the spelling to Ashley as quickly as I could.
