It's okay, but it's mediocre in a way that turns me off. It screams mediocrity. I felt the same way about trendy names like Brittany and Amber when they were still being used frequently but were very much on their way out of style. Now, though, I'm okay with them... so maybe in about 10 years, I'll be more okay with Taylor. But I wouldn't want to be a baby named Taylor right now.
I think it's more suitable to a boy, because it's a surname name, and its lack of personal-ness and its literal "tailor" meaning are undignified. Boys can carry the indignity (rough casual style) of surname first names better than girls IMO. On girls, surnamey surnames always seem more diminishing to me than they do on boys. Probably because men traditionally get called by their surnames in certain male-stereotypical contexts.
I've run across a couple of girl Taylors, but only heard of boy Taylors.
