do you immediately think of the word ugly when you hear the name Aglaia?
I love it but I'm not sure it's usable...

No, I don't. I like Aglaia.
This happened to me with Micheline when I was taking French. The name came up in our textbook and the teacher (straight from Normandy) mentioned how it was considered an old and ugly name by modern French standards - that no one would name their newborn daughter that today. I've loved the name Micheline since I was in like the 7th grade

:-)
Aw I love Aglaia! When I've asked about it in the past, yeah, most people say it sounds too close to "ugly." I'd still totally use it but would probably opt for the Aglaya spelling to stem pronunciation problems.
No, I love it. It's my cats middle name. Originally she was Aglaia nn Aggie, then I got talked out of it and into Willow Aglaia nn Wills. But I wish I'd stuck with Aglaia.
Love the meaning and its very pretty with a workable nn. Two thumbs up - I'd be thrilled to meet a little Aglaia.

My style is "ugly-pretty" so if ugly did come to mind when I saw/heard Aglaia it wouldn't be a bad thing. :-) But it doesn't come to mind. I think of a Russian novel I read decades ago with Aglaia as a supporting character. ("The Idiot," I think -- or maybe "Oblomov" -- not sure).
I love Aglaia. Nn Aggie is super cute.

No, not ugly, but it does sound too close to "egg layer" to me.
I think it looks prettier than it sounds.
