Girl!!
More accurately, "Sage-the-plant"= girl and "Sage-like-wise-man"= boy. When I hear "Sage" I think of the plant primarily, so that's why I like it on a girl.
I know two- one is an actual Sage and one is Sayge or Saige or something (the younger one).
I don't think it's getting trendy. I don't know very many. It still sounds like a pretty, offbeat and unusual plant name to me.
(Then again, I'm still a Willow fan even though I'm pretty sure that name has definitively crossed the 'trendy' line... meh.)
