What do you think of Gaia? Too many pronunciation troubles? I pronounce it GAH-ya. I don't mind GY-ah. I just really dislike GAY-a. Would that be a likely pronunciation? Too close to trendy Maya?

depends on where you are @ the time... Where you are, it might work... and people would prob'ly ask which prn. to use. I don't think I could use it myself because it would make me think of the theme song for the Gaya festival in Uwajima all the time.

Aside from that, it's prob'ly ok and won't likely be an issue if you don't live in Ehime. Could make a person wonder if the child was born or conceived during the festival... depending on when the child was born.
Since it's not overused, but being kinda close to Maya, maybe not to hard for people to get while still having it's own flavour to it.

I have never heard it pronounced in any other way than GAH-ya. I like it, it's beautiful.

It's a bit of a GP for me. I like it a lot, but couldn't ever use it I think. I say it like guy-ah.

I like Gaia (GY-ah), and I don't think it's trendy like Maya. It has a very different feel.

Hehe! Gaia Online! It was awful when it started and still is! But I do think of it too.
Also, really, as awsome as the association is, it's no less awkward than Gay. It has the same teasing potential.
I know lots of people wax lyrical over it, but I've never liked it - and not because of either association, or any association at all, to be honest. I just don't see its charm.

Eh, I guess you're right, but I can still see Gaia and Gay sharing irritating, outdated, homophobic teasing nicknames, even if you're using "GI-yah" or "GAH-yah" rather than "GAY-ah", or possibly moreso since where I live the former two, unless you had some ethnic or cultural reason for using them, would come across as being very forced and artificial and awkward and she would probably, one way or another, still be called GAY-ah quite a lot. I don't get the analogy with Virginia, but that might just be me. It seemed to be missing the point.
And aren't there several possible ways of saying Virginia as well, incidentally?

I was only saying that to me there isn't as much teasing potential for Gaia as there is for Gay.
I used Virginia as an example because to me naming a kid Gay would be like naming a kid Virgin in terms of teasing potential whereas Gaia and Virginia might lead to teasing but not necessarily because it's not that obvious.
I've only heard of one pronunciation of Virginia in English speaking countries.

There are two pronunciations I've heard for Virginia in the US, vər-JIN-yə which is more common and vər-JIN-ee-əh which isn't very common.
And upon thinking about it more I've also heard the JIN part pronounced JEEN before.
I use to be apart of Gaia Online in 11th or 12th grade. I thought it was lame but slightly addictive when I was participating in it. Obviously it wasn't additive enough but was lame enough that I left quickly. It's basically a very middle school place to RP and chat just like Neopets was. Also like Neopets it has a lot of stuff you can customize. These days it also has a MMO you can play so maybe it has become less lame than it was. Gaia Online was a fairly popular place to hang out amongst kids my age who liked anime when I was in high school. The site started when I was in 10th grade.
