[Opinions] Yuri
Tonight is Yuri's Night, after the Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, who became the first man to enter outer space on this day in 1961. What are your thoughts on the name Yuri?

When I hear of the name "Yuri" I think of two characters: Yuri Ishtar(f) from the manga Red River (also called Anatolia Story) and Yuri Killian(m) from the anime Kaleido Star. Although, I know its also a genre of manga-yuri: girls' love, I think of it first as a name because I knew of these two characters first.

There are two forms of Yuri... one is the Russian and Ukrainian version of George and the other is a Japanese name that means lily. Unfortunately, there is a Japanese form of erotic literature and manga that is also known as yuri and that is what I see first. Then I see Russian cosmonauts.

I'd like it if it didn't remind me of homoerotic manga. Yaoi is "boy's love"; yuri is "girl's love". So, basically, all I can think is "Lesbian manga"!

I never knew that. Suddenly, some of the jokes I've heard around my friend Yuri make much more sense!

One of my friends is married to a Yuri. He's originally Ukrainian and, in addition to being a real sweetheart, is probably the funniest person I know. I never paid much attention to the name Yuri until I met him, but it makes me smile now. I don't think it would be an easy name to grow up with in the US because of its similarity to "urine." It's one of those names I think works better on other people from other places than on a local kid.

I have a cousin (girl) named Yuri, so I've always seen it as feminine.

I don't like it. I think of the yuri genre of anime. (I do like a few yuri series, but the name still looks awkward to me.) Though Yuri is also used as a feminine given name in Japan. But if you're going for the Russian name, then I guess it's okay.

Yep, that's my first association as well.

I actually like Sayuri better, even though it's associated with Memoirs of a Geisha, one of my least favorite movies.

Fine and kind of handsome on a Russian guy, but on a non-Russian? Too easy to make urine jokes.
