[Opinions] Minona
A couple of days ago, I stumbled across the name Minona on another name board. And tonight it was kind of-sort of mentioned again on the "names not in the database" thread.
I think it's an interesting name, so I had a quick peek into its history.
Apparently Minona is a character from the "Ossian Poems", those works that several European artists were so enamored with. Writers, composers, you name it.
Beethoven's alleged illegitimate daughter had this name.
Subsequently, from around the 1820s on, the name found some usage in Germany and from around the 1850s on also in Denmark. Only to disappear again by 1900.
Anyway, what do you think of this name?

Ahh, that's probably where Astrid Lindgren found "Minonna"! There is a minor character in Mio my Mio called Minonna-Nell. I think it's gorgeously sweet, but I have wondered where Lindgren found Minonna.
Hmm, I feel like I should remember Minonna-Nell. I mean I've read the book and I've watched the movie (centuries ago, or so it seems ;) ) - and I have no idea who Minonna-Nell was *blush*
I've tried to google her, but nothing. No mention of her anywhere.
So, Caprice, help me out, please. Who is she?
See how elusive Minona/Minonna is? :`(

I haven't actually read the book and it was probably 25 years since I watched the movie. It was my cousin who told me about Minonna-Nell. I think she is a sister of a boy called Jiri and they live by a well that whispers fairytales...or something...
There is also Milimani, the weaver's daughter, who sacrifices herself to save the others.

Minnie is too cartoon-rodent and probably always will be. Give me Winona any time - but then my reference is to Hiawatha and not anyone more recent!
To be honest, it reminds me of a little kid named Winona who hasn't mastered her capital M's yet.
I don't care for the name, but Mina or Minnie could be cute nicknames.

Hmm, yeah, that's one of my main concerns - "Gosh, she doesn't even know how to spell and pronounce Winona!".
On the other hand... I'm still intrigued by this name. I love this whimsical and kind of wistful feel I get from it. It's like she belongs here - but not quite. She's almost forgotten - but hasn't completely fallen into oblivion. It almost feels like Minona lives a life on the threshold of two worlds. I think that's what makes her so fascinating to me.
Silly, huh?
