You could use it as a full name, easy. It's very familiar. Since I met a girl called Bess (not a nickname for anything), I think anything's possible. As a nickname, I would only use it with something like Augustus, where the Gus sound is actually present (Angus or August will not do). But in general I don't like forcing a full name to achieve a desired nickname.
