What do you think of Lana for a girl? It used to be my favorite name, until I realized what happens when you read it backwards. It put me off the name for a long time, but now I think I don't mind so much anymore as it's such a beautiful name. I'm still a bit worried because in elementary school we used to call each other by what our names spelled backwards all of the time so I'm wondering what other people think.
I pronounce it LAH-na (I dislike LAY-na). I could spell it Lahna or Lanah to avoid the problem I mentioned above, but I don't like the way these spellings look at all.

Lana Lang. Horrible "Smallville" show. Blegh. It was so bad.
I think all kids go through the phase of writing everything backwards. I remember everyone doing it in elementary and middle schools. As soon as she does it--or worse, if she's being bullied and they notice it first--that could lead to some serious teasing.
I also think it's an ugly name. It just sounds so... blegh. LAH-na. Sounds like something someone would accidentally say because of a head cold they have.

I remember some of my fellow male classmates from high school wanted to name their future daughters Lana Laro and Jenny Talia just for the double entendres. I don't think that will ever happen though. So the only people who might bring it up are adolescent boys.

Seriously, though, I think it's an okay name. I had a boss named Lana, and no one ever called her Anal, or brought it up. She was very smart and cool, so I see it as a smart and cool kinda name.

I met a Lana two weeks ago at kindergarten orientation. I've never seen any kids use their names backwards as nns or to tease others. I'd use it as a nn for a longer name over kre8v spellnigs.

I'd never considered Lana backwards before and I'm not sure many would give it any thought, however, I always say don't rule out the minds of adolescent boys! If it bothers you, use a full name such as Alana or Svetlana. BWT, I don't think spelling it kr8ivelee would help matters at all. It would just be a forever hassle for your child.
I do know what you mean, though. I liked Naomi a lot until someone in the comments section mentioned that it's 'I moan' backwards, ugh.

The anal spelling is a problem, but not a big one. Not as big a problem as say, Analia, which I have seen.

I'm excited that you posted this since Lana is a name that I've just recently decided that I really like (within the last 2 days)! I think it's beautiful and elegant, plus it has the added draw of being familiar without being extremely popular.
I wouldn't worry about how it's spelled backwards. That reason has always turned me away from Natasha, but it doesn't seem to be a problem for any Natashas that I know.

Personally I have always pronounced this name LAN-uh (LAN as in land without the d) but I actually like LAH-na better. I really like the name, but I have to admit I've got the same problem with it as you.
However, if you adore Lana and want to use it - use it! I myself have been loving a name that has some teasing potential lately, and I still love that name regardless of all connotations.
Spelling-wise, I actually love Lanah. It helps to solve the backwards problem, it looks quite natural (not fake) and more like LAH-na than LAN-uh.

I's very popular in my par of the world (pronounced LAH-nah) and while I'm a bit tired of it I do like it. I prefer Lena, the same way I prefer Leda to Lada.
Since we don’t speak English here the backwards reading isn’t an issue, but in the US I'd probably use it as a nickname for a longer name (in my case Alana).
