I didn't change the channel after What Not to Wear ended, and I heard the names of the brides on an episode of Four Weddings after it.

Christa is ok. Araceli is cool. Jennifer is ok but boring and 80's.
Kale is meh. I like Calais as a name though. I prefer Kalei to Kale because Kale looks way too much like KAYL.

Kale is silliness. It must get mispronounced ALL the time. Plus I would think male, not female. And of course, I think of the vegetable.

Araceli: Very pretty! I love this name.

Jennifer: Snore.

Kale: If you spell it like the food, it should be pronounced like the food. kah LAY is so frigging stupid with this spelling. "Uhm, it's not Ashley. It's ash LAY because that's classy." Ugh.

Now, Calais would be a neat name but I don't have a problem with place names like some people do. Kale is a fine name if they didn't pronounce it like pretentious princesses.

Actually, if the bride was Hawaiian, then it's not pretentious... It's just how the language works... their e is pronounced ay. I guess it is easier for me since I speak Jpns. and have studied linguistics enough for that to be normal, though I realize to a monolingual En. speaker, it might look odd... You just have to understand the phonetics of the language you're working with.

The bride is African American. I do speak other languages and can see how you get Calais out of Kale, but it's still instinctively wrong. If I was watching a show in Spanish and saw a Kale and heard Calais, it would make more sense because it's the Spanish writing system, not the English one.

What state did the African American grow up in? Or where was she born? Is it possible she was conceived in Hw? Some African languages also have similar vowel patterns in their phonetic systems. Hawaiians have a lot of mixed ethnicities... Plus, if someone encountered a name on someone and liked it, that could account for a name winding up on an unexpected person. I know of a blond-haired, blue-eyed Aiko because her parents are American, but she was born in Japan. There's more to a person's culture than the colour of his/her skin. Thus, if it's at least a real name that CAN be spelt that way, it's not worth making a big deal out of imo.

Well, I'm glad it's not pronounced like the vegetable. Even if it were, it's not a terrible sounding name - as long as it's short for something like Kaley. I'm happy to see Araceli :)
