How do you pronounce Rosalind? I've heard it pronounced two different ways and I'm wondering which is the most common.

Also, what are your thoughts on the name? I really like it as a middle name.

I'm from Australia, and I pronounce it ROZ-uh-lind. The pronunciation RAHZ-uh-lind, as I saw other posters mention, sounds oh so American to me.

Rosalind is one of my favourite names! It's elegant and honours one my of scientific heroes, Rosalind Franklin.

I say it "ROZ-lind". I love the name Rosalind. It looks like a fairy-tale princess name and sound like she'll break your jaw if ya look at her wrong!

I live in Australia and would say ROSE-a-lind. It would make a very pretty MN =)

ROSE-ah-lind. I like it, but it's a little heavy as a first name. I prefer Rosalie because it seems lighter, more fun and modern. I feel like Rosalind would almost definitely get shortened to Rosie, Rosa, Rose etc., whereas Rosalie wouldn't.

I dislike the ROZ-ah-lind pronunciation. I think it sounds really harsh.
I'm not a fan because of the pronunciation difficulty. I love Rose just on its own. :)

RAHZ-ah-lind.
Just went to see Romeo + Juliet on Broadway last week and got to hear Orlando Bloom say this one quite a few times. Now with his voice in my head is the only way I can hear it.

I've only ever heard ROZalind on a living person; which squares with the probable etymology. If it's derived from Rose, then no doubt ROSEalind would be suitable. But I much prefer the Germanic origin!

I've known a very nice one and a rather ghastly one. No help there. The As You Like It connection is a very good one. The pronunciation issue ... is an issue. But I wouldn't hesitate to use Rosamond, which I've also heard as ROZamond instead of ROSEamond. So, yeah, maybe a mn is the way to go.

What would you put with it as a fn?

Rose-a-lind, with the beginning like the word "rose". I think it's absolutely beautiful this way. I'm a bit disappointed to see that so many people pronounce it ROZ, I think that just sounds so ugly.

For what it's worth, I'm from the west coast of the U.S. I say, "RAHZ-uh-lind."

Rosalind is lovely without trying too hard. She's effortlessly elegant. :-)

When I first met my husband, Jimmy Carter was President and my husband had a joke that he loved to tell and the joke started with whomever was First Lady at the time walking into a bar. So at the time the First Lady was Rosalynn Carter and he persisted in calling her "RAHZ-uh-lin" Carter, close to the way you pronounce Rosalind, just without the final D. Every time I told him that it was "ROZ-a-lin" with a long O and my sister told him the same thing when he told her the joke, and he persisted in ignoring that and continued to pronounce it the same way. But he did that with everything. It was always a waste of time to correct him in pronunciation.

This is the way I prefer to pronounce it. Seems like most people say ROZ-uh-lind, though.

To me in Britain (and maybe the other British posters who replied below) ROZ-uh-lind is how I would spell out the pronunciation where the first syllable sounds like the name Ros / Roz (so RAHZ-uh-lind to an American?). I've only ever heard it this way, never as ROZE-uh-lind.

Oh...

Hm. Perhaps I should amend my answer. I say Rosalind like RAHZ-uh-lind but for some reason I thought that would be phonetically ROZ-uh-lind. Probably because I like the nn Roz and that's pronounced RAHZ.

ROZ-ah-lind. I think it's lovely, very feminine without being a pretty princess name. It reminds me of the middle ages and a dusty rose color.

Out loud I say ROZ-a-lind. In my head I think rose-a-lind like it's separate words.

I think it's gorgeous. Regal, pretty, strong, feminine. I prefer Roslyn (ROZ-lyn) but Rosalind is not too far behind it.

Have you seen any of Rosalind Russel's movies? I watched "The Trouble with Angels" not too long ago.
